Garza holds a B.S. in journalism from Texas A&M University and aJ.D. from Gonzaga University.[1]

From 2011 to 2014, Garza worked as an assistant attorney general. Her professional experience also includes work as a law clerk for the Texas Civil Rights Project and as a firefighter with the Austin Fire Department.[1]

As of her run for re-election in 2016, Garza was the chair of the Austin City Council's Public Utilities and Regional Affordability Committees and the vice-chair of the Open Space, Environment & Sustainability Committee. She was also a member of the city council's Austin Energy Utility Oversight, Health and Human Services, and Mobility Committees and of the intergovernmental Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority Committees.[2]
