Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Delaware Department of Education reads:[1]

To empower every learner with the highest quality education through shared leadership, innovative practices and exemplary services.[2]

Superintendent

The current Delaware Secretary of Education isCynthia Marten (nonpartisan). Marten assumed office in 2025.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of seven voting members who serve six-year terms. The Board also includes one non-voting student representative and one non-voting Delaware State Teacher of the Year. Voting members of the Board are appointed by theGovernor of Delaware and confirmed by theDelaware State Senate. According to state law, "[...]At least 2 members of the Board shall have had prior experience on a local board of education; no more than 4 members of the Board shall belong to the same political party; no person shall be eligible to appointment who has not been for at least 5 years immediately preceding appointment a resident of this state; and no person shall be appointed to the Board who is in any way subject to its authority. [...]In constituting the Board, the President shall be appointed from the State at large, but the appointments of the remaining 6 members shall be made so that there shall be on the Board at least 1 resident of the City of Wilmington, 3 residents from New Castle County outside the City of Wilmington, 1 from Kent County and 1 from Sussex County." Board members are compensated $100 per meeting and receive reimbursement for their travel and operating expenses. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[3]
