Aconvention-referred constitutional amendment is aconstitutional amendment that astate constitutional convention proposes and requires voter approval to become part of a state's constitution.

The last time that voters decided on convention-referred constitutional amendments was in1986 in Rhode Island. In 1984, voters approved a constitutional convention question, and the convention referred 14 constitutional amendments to the ballot in 1986.

In 14 states, a constitutional convention question is anautomatic ballot referral, meaning no legislative vote is required. Rather, the state constitution includes a provision calling for the question at a specific interval. Oklahoma has a requirement; however, state officials have declined to place a question on the ballot since 1970.
