What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Public education is critical to the vibrancy of democracy. I will fight to fund schools equitably and increase spending for our schools and teachers. I will fight to defeat vouchers and any other efforts that take money away from public schools.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Representative Patricia Schroeder, former Congresswoman from Denver, CO. She possesses intelligence, integrity, compassion, wit, and persistence. She is a stalwart fighter for progressive issues, and for women's rights. Her fearlessness and tireless efforts for families, children, and women have inspired me since the 1980's.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Transparency, communication, integrity, compassion, and persistence. You must put your constituents' needs before your political desires.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

As a lawyer, I am familiar with the legislative process and negotiating with those who do not agree with me. I try to find paths to compromise, recognizing that both sides must sacrifice to move forward. That said, I am tenacious and know where to draw the line. I have been a leader and contributor to my community in numerous capacities for the past 32 years - in the schools, my church, community organizations, and political campaigns. I have the experience, compassion and integrity to serve my District well.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Obtain feedback from ALL constituents and work to find solutions that help those most in need from our government.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I will work hard to solve the issues that are most important to building the community that my constituents have told me that they want: public education, affordable health care, affordable housing, building a family-friendly economy, and protecting the right to vote.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The assassination of President Kennedy. I was in third grade. The next one was the assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King in 1968; I was in 8th grade and lived in Atlanta. Both men have inspired me in my philosophy of life and my politics. I want to serve my country and provide equal opportunity and justice to all.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was a ticket taker at Six Flags over Georgia for about 6 months when I was 16. I also worker at the "Lost Parents" section of the park, helping keep lost children safe until their parents were located. It was an eye-opening experience.

What happened on your most awkward date?

My date ignored me and flirted with most of the other young women in our group. I returned home on my own.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas. It is the time when most people put others before themselves and focus on what it truly important - family, friends and community.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She was the first feminist author that I read and I had an amazing English teacher in high school who opened the door to all types of literature for me. I have read it probably 5 times.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Eowyn from Lord of the Rings.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

The wall of photographs of my family! It chronicles my children, stepchildren, parents, husband, and all of our siblings. It makes me smile every time I walk past it.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Respect by Aretha Franklin.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Being accepted and respected in a profession that is dominated by men.

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

The rules that determine which chamber forms the budget and raises revenue. Also, the House Representatives' districts are smaller, so they represent fewer people and may be more "democratic" in their viewpoints.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

Not necessarily. New perspectives are always valuable, as long as everyone is willing to listen and work toward consensus.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

It is tied between equitably funding public education and resolving the opioid crisis.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Mutual respect and working to find consensus in resolving the issues confronting the State.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

It is essential to develop relationships with legislators of both parties. No one can know every bill and every issue; it is imperative to learn from others' experiences and knowledge. Legislation and governing are both team efforts.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

An independent commission

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

I am not yet sure, but I think the Judiciary Committee and/or the Elections Committee.

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

Not at this time.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

Mary Gile, Sylvia Larsen, and Howard Moffett.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Not at this time.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

The stories about the impact of the opioid crisis are the most heart-wrenching and difficult. It has touched so many in such sad ways.
