Structure

Mission

As of 2024, neither the Connecticut Department of Education nor the Connecticut State Board of Education had published a mission statement. However, the Connecticut State Board of Education published a five-year comprehensive plan for K-12 education:[1]

Every Student Prepared for Learning, Life, and Work Beyond School[2]

Superintendent

The current Connecticut Commissioner of Education isCharlene Russell-Tucker (nonpartisan). Russell-Tucker assumed office in 2022.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of nine voting members, two non-voting student members, three ex offico non-voting members, and the Commissioner of the Department of Higher Education as secretary. 13 board members are appointed by theGovernor of Connecticut, with the voting members and the commissioner receiving four-year terms and the student representatives receiving one-year terms. One ex officio member is appointed by the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system board of regents. According to state law, at least two of the voting members must have experience in either the manufacturing industry or a trade taught in the state's Technical High School System and at least one voting member must have experience in the agricultural industry. The State Board of Education recommends for appointment the state'sCommissioner of Education to the governor, and the commissioner also serves as the secretary of the board. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[3]
