Mission

The mission statement of the Colorado Department of Education reads:^[1]

The current Colorado Commissioner of Education isSusana Cordova (nonpartisan). Cordova assumed office in 2023.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of nine members who serve six-year terms. Since 1950, voters have elected board members on a partisan basis from each of Colorado's federalcongressional districts. An at-large seat was added during the 2022 election to avoid tied votes.^[3] The State Board of Education appoints the state'sCommissioner of Education, who also serves as the secretary of the board. Board members are not compensated for their services. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.^[4]
