Cecilia Altonaga
Cecilia M. Altonaga is thechief judge of theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. She joined the court in May 2003 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush (R). She became chief judge in 2021. Prior to appointment, Altonaga was a county judge on the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida.[1]
Early life and education
Born inBaltimore, Maryland, Altonaga graduated from Florida International University with her bachelor's degree in 1983 and from Yale Law School inNew Haven, CT in 1986.[1]
Professional career
Altonaga was a County Attorney for theMiami-Dade County Attorney's Office in 1986. In 1987, Altonaga served as a law clerk for formerfederal judgeEdward Davis in theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Altonaga served as Assistant County Attorney in theMiami-Dade County Attorney's Office from 1988 to 1996. From 1996 to 2003, Altonaga was appointed Judge of the County Court for the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida.[1]

Altonaga was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by PresidentGeorge W. Bush on January 15, 2003 to a seat vacated byShelby Highsmith. Altonaga was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 6, 2003, on a Senate vote and received commission onMay 7, 2003.[2]
