As State Senator, I've championed issues like transparency, election reform, public health, reproductive freedom, climate change, and COVID-19 response, in addition to supporting the people and communities I represent. I'm a proven leader who wants to return to the State Senate so I can continue to deliver results for our district. My record speaks not only to my capacity to legislate effectively, but also to legislate with purpose. I'm just getting started; we have so much more work to do to generate laws that better reflect our shared values, and I remain deeply committed to and invested in getting it done. Previously, I served as an elected local official and an award-winning attorney in the Patrick and Baker administrations, as well as a law professor/scholar, union steward, and private-sector attorney. As a proud Jewish woman, spouse, and mother to two young children, I am deeply dedicated to elevating and centering marginalized voices and making Massachusetts better for future generations.
    • I am a proactive public health champion, leading the charge to help Massachusetts recover from COVID-19 and take steps to prevent other infectious disease crises in the future. I've been a longtime advocate for access to quality and affordable health care, and I believe no one should be denied a visit to a doctor because they lost their job and their health insurance.
    • As State Senator, I've delivered results to our community. In addition to hundreds of millions of dollars in general local aid and funding for schools and transportation, I secured $250,000 for personal protective equipment and to get schools ready for students in our community. As the Chair of the Municipalities Committee, I helped pass legislation to ensure all households retain access to water and electricity despite falling behind on bills.
    • I am a leading advocate of reproductive health care in Massachusetts. As Washington politicians and Beacon Hill conservatives continue to attack our reproductive health rights, I passed legislation to reduce racial disparities in maternal health and make midwives accessible. I actively support the ROE Act, which will protect and expand reproductive health care, while ensuring access if Roe v. Wade was ever overturned.
I'm passionate about public health, reproductive freedom, election reform, intersectional justice and equity, climate action, education access, transparency, and good government, to name a few policy areas. While I am passionate about a variety of public policy issues, I am most passionate about improving the lives of the people in this district. As a former health care attorney, I have long held an interest in public health policy, which impacted our everyday lives long before the pandemic hit. I am committed to reproductive freedom and individual autonomy, and I believe we must continue to ensure everyone can make the decision that is best for them without facing down a gauntlet of obstacles. I'm also deeply invested in increasing government transparency and working to ensure our elections are free, fair, open, and accessible to all.

Serving the people and communities I represent, having compassion for others and a serious drive to help people, listening, collaborating, developing and maintaining a deep understanding of policy, critical analysis, excellent legal and legislative drafting, stellar knowledge of state and local governments and lawmaking processes, and advancing well-crafted legislation reflecting the shared values of justice, fairness, and equity.
A legacy of stellar service to the district and strong policy advancements on justice, fairness, and equity for all. I am proud to be building this legacy already.
The first historical event I remember is the whopper blizzard that struck my hometown, just outside of Albany, NY, on October 4, 1987. I was 8 years old. According to the New York Times, we had nearly two feet of snow in the earliest snowstorm on record. (Honestly, I thought it was more like 4-5 feet, but everything looks bigger when you're younger, right?) School closed for an entire week and we had no power for several days. I remember my parents pulling out the gas-powered camping stove so we could cook, and I remember the neighbors coming over to join us. I think we might have been the only house on the block that had a way of actually cooking.
My very first job was managing a rental property business for the owners when they went on vacation. I was 11 or 12 years old. I held the job for several years.

My first full-time job as an adult was as an associate attorney at a law firm. I held the job for 2.5 years before changing the focus on my practice and moving to a different firm.
The bedtime song I wrote for my kids and sing to them every night before they go to sleep.
Yes, and specifically at the state level of government, in addition to local government experience. I brought both state and local government experience to my service in the Senate upon inauguration, and will bring a trove of additional experience back to the office in my next term.
    I favor independent redistricting commissions.
When I was first running for this seat, I had a conversation with a single mother who told me that the public high school never gave her son a textbook because her municipality simply didn't have enough money for books for each student. He never received the book, so of course when the test came on the material in the book, he failed it. Her story remains a stark example of the gross education inequities that came to be in our Commonwealth. I am very proud that in my first term, I helped to strengthen and pass the Student Opportunity Act, a broad reaching education equity bill aimed at fixing this exact problem so that all Massachusetts students have access to the same quality education, regardless of zip code.

    Scorecards

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
