The following down ballot seats were elected in 2014 inArizona:

Aprimary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Arizona utilizes asemi-closed primary system. Unaffiliated voters may choose which party's primary they will vote in, but voters registered with a party can only vote in that party's primary.[1]

Duties

The mission of the office of the state mine inspector is to enforce state mining laws which protect mine employees, residents and the Arizona government.[2] Some of the duties of the mine inspector include:[3]

  • Inspect at least once every three months, every active underground mine in the state employing fifty or more persons, and at least once each year, every other mine. The inspector shall inspect the operation, conditions, safety appliances, machinery, equipment, sanitation and ventilation, the means of ingress and egress, the means taken to protect the lives, health and safety of the miners, the cause of accidents and deaths occurring at the mine, and the means taken to comply with provisions of this title.
  • Inspect any abandoned or inactive mine to determine whether any dangerous condition exists which may affect the health and safety of the general public.
  • Inspect for dangerous conditions which may present a health and safety hazard to the public. If hazards exist, the inspector may erect warning signs across or near the entrance of any mine shaft, portal, pit or other mine opening prohibiting the entry of unauthorized persons or erect other protective devices as necessary.

Duties

The treasurer is the chief banker and investment officer of the state ofArizona. Thetreasurer manages the state's investment portfolio and directs the state's banking services. He or she also maintains a separate accounting record for the state to "provide a check and balance on the state accounting system." The treasurer's office contracts with Arizona banks to "process the state's receipts and disbursements; handle money and security transfers; report on the state's accounts, balances and payment activities; and provide related banking services..."[8]

Duties

The superintendent of public instruction oversees and administrates the Arizona Department of Education, which manages the state's public school system. His general duties include managing the employees of the department. Other specific responsibilities enumerated by law include:[12]

  • Executing the policies established by the State Board of Education.
  • Apportioning state education funds to individual counties each year.
  • Distributes school materials, courses of study, administrative information, teachers certificates and other items to individual school districts.
  • Audits the accounts of school officials across the state with the assistance of the auditor general.
