Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Arizona Department of Education reads:[1]

“The Arizona Department of Education is a service organization committed to raising academic outcomes and empowering parents.[2]”

Superintendent

The current Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction isThomas C. Horne (R). Horne assumed office in 2023.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of 11 members, including theSuperintendent of Public Instruction. The other 10 members of the board are appointed by theGovernor with the consent of theState Senate for four-year terms. TheArizona Constitution requires that the State Board of Education includes the "president of a state university or state college, four lay members, a president or chancellor of a community college district, a person who is an owner or administrator of a charter school, a superintendent of a high school district, a classroom teacher and a county school superintendent" in addition to the state superintendent. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system. In Arizona, the State Board of Education is also the State Board for Vocational and Technological Education.[3]
