Robert Allan Edgar (Tennessee)
Robert Allan Edgar is anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He joined the Tennessee court in 1985 after being nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan (R).[1] He assumedsenior status on October 7, 2005.[2]
Early life and education
Edgar graduated from Davidson College inNorth Carolina with his bachelor's degree in 1962 and later graduated from Duke University School of Law with hisJ.D. degree in 1965. After law school, Edgar served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967.[2]
Professional career
Edgar served in private practice inChattanooga from 1967 to 1985. Edgar also served in the Tennessee State House of Representatives from 1970 to 1972.[2]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Tennessee
On the recommendation of Congressman John Duncan, Sr., Edgar was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on February 26, 1985, to a seat vacated byHerbert Milburn as Milburn went onsenior status. Edgar was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 15, 1985, on a Senate vote and received commission onApril 16, 1985. Edgar served as the chief judge of the court from 1998 to 2005 before assuming senior status onOctober 7, 2005.[2]
Western District of Michigan
Edgar transferred to the Western District of Michigan in 2011. According to the court historical society newsletter, "His [Edgar's] joint service comes about through the judiciary’s designation process–in his case, designation by the Chief Judge of the Sixth Circuit. Both districts are within the Sixth Circuit. Judge Edgar’s designations have no time limit, unlike the special designations with set periods of time that are issued for a judge to try a particular case in another district."[1]
