Alabama School Districts and Taxes, Amendment 8 (1949)
TheAlabama School Districts, Amendment 8, also known asAmendment 8, was on the ballot inAlabama onDecember 13, 1949, as alegislatively referred constitutional amendment. It wasapproved. The amendment proposed to amend the constitution. The amendment proposed to allow the board of dducation of Lawrence County to designate and establish a special school district within the school district in which the municipality of Courtland is located, and it would become indebted and issue bonds in an amount not exceeding $100,000 for the construction and equipment of a school building within said district. To pay said indebtedness, and its interest, Lawrence County may levy and collect an annual tax on all property situated within said district, at a rate not in excess of five mills; provided, whenever enough has been collected to retire the bonds and pay the interest thereon the tax will cease and any surplus remaining will revert to the Courtland school district.[1]
