Six statewide ballot measures were certified for2014 ballots in the state ofAlabama, including onelegislatively referred constitutional amendment on theJuly 15, 2014 primary ballot and three on theNovember 4, 2014 general election ballot.

The primary runoff ballot measure,Amendment 1, wasapproved. Of the fivelegislatively referred constitutional amendments that appeared on the general election ballot, all five wereapproved.


The state does not allowinitiatives or referendums, therefore, all measures were referred by theAlabama Legislature. The2014 regular legislative session began onJanuary 14, 2014 and convened onApril 3, 2014.[1]

Historical facts

  • Between 1996 and 2013, an average of six measures appeared annually on the ballot in Alabama. Therefore, 2014 was a below-average year, based on the number of certified measures.
  • From 1996 to 2014, the number of measures on statewide ballots ranged from one to 14.
  • Between 1996 and 2014, 48 of 80, or 60 percent, of Alabama ballot measures were approved by voters.
  • Conversely, 31 of 80, or 40 percent, of measures were defeated.
