【ローマ＝松浦一樹】ローマ法王ベネディクト１６世は２１日、バチカン（法王庁）での礼拝で、１７世紀の天文学者ガリレオ・ガリレイの地動説について、「自然の法則は神の業に対する理解を促した」と述べ、同法王としては初めてガリレオの研究を公式に認めた。 バチカンは１７世紀に、コペルニクスの地動説を支持したガリレオを「異端」として宗教裁判にかけ、有罪にした歴史がある。前法王ヨハネ・パウロ２世は１９９２年、教会側の非を認め、公式に謝罪したが、現法王は枢機卿時代に「ガリレオ裁判は正当だった」と発言したことで知られている。 現法王は礼拝で、「ガリレオの望遠鏡による初の天体観測から４００年になる」とも述べ、研究をたたえた。
