Thomas creció enHouston (Texas) y la so contorna, onde se graduó de Lamar Consolidated High School, na locadlidad deRosenberg. Antes de llanzase a la so carrera en solitariu, Thomas cantaba nun coru de la ilesia cuando yera adolescente y depués xunióse al grupu musical The Triumphs.[6][7]Mientres el so últimu añu fíxose amigu de Roy Head, de la banda Roy Head and The Traits. En 1968, Thomas volvió consiguir un ésitu, primero con «The eyes of a New York woman», y cinco meses más tarde col muncho más esitosu «Hooked on a feeling», que cuntó col soníu d'unsitar llétricu y foi llanzáu per primer vegada nel álbumOn my way (de Scepter Records). «Hooked on a feeling» convertir nel segundu discu de Thomas con ventes millonaries.[8]Un añu más tarde, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid presentaron a Thomas interpretando «Raindrops keep fallin' on my head» (cantar deBurt Bacharach yHal David) que ganó l'Óscar al meyor cantar orixinal d'esi añu y convirtióse nel cantar númberu unu nel Billboard Hot 100 en xineru de 1970.
