Abstract Prior to European settlement, the portion of north and central Florida corresponding to the historic range of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) was dominated by fire-dependent, herbaceous and open woodland plant communities. Economic development coupled with fire suppression lead to a drastic decline in the abundance, contiguity and integrity of these natural communities. We present a classification and description of natural, fire-maintained pineland communities of this highly…

Ecological value of retaining pyrophytic oaks in longleaf pine ecosystems
- J. HiersJeffrey R. WaltersJohnny P. Stowe
- 2014
Environmental Science
In examining the diversity of oak species found within longleaf pine ecosystems, this work identifies a group of pyrophytic oaks and shows that these oaks are critical components of sandhill and other longleaf Pine ecosystems, and their occurrence should be considered as part of conservation and restoration goals.

Fire Frequency Effects on Longleaf Pine ( Pinus palustris P. Miller) Vegetation in South Carolina and Northeast Florida, USA
- J. S. GlitzensteinD. R. StrengD. Wade

Environmental Science
Results of two long-term prescribed fire studies support the hypothesis that burning as frequently as fuels permit is optimal for maintaining the largest number of native ground-layer plant species, however, frre frequency effects on species composition differed between the two studies.
EFFECTS OF FIRE REGIME AND HABITAT ON TREE DYNAMICS IN NORTH FLORIDA LONGLEAF PINE SAVANNAS
- J. S. GlitzensteinW. PlattD. R. Streng
- 1995
Environmental Science
Though longleaf pine population dynamics did not differ markedly as a result of burning season and frequency, there were important differences in pine dynamics between the two habitats, and populations of longleaf pines in the sandhills appeared to be density regulated, while flatwoods pine populations were declining regardless of the level of intraspecific competition.
