Aims. We test predictions of evolution models on mixing of CNO-cycled products in massive stars from a fundamental perspective. Relative changes within the theoretical C:N:O abundance ratios and the buildup of helium are compared with observational results. Methods. A sample of well-studied Galactic massive stars is presented. High-quality optical spectra are carefully analysed using improved NLTE line-formation and comprehensive analysis strategies. The results are put in the context of the…

Mixing of CNO-cycled matter in pulsationally and magnetically active massive stars

Abstract We report on the abundances of helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in a larger sample of Galactic massive stars of ~7-20 M⊙ near the main sequence, composed of apparently normal objects,

Evolution of surface CNO abundances in massive stars

The nitrogen to carbon (N/C) and nitrogen to oxygen (N/O) ratios are the most sensitive quantities to mixing in stellar interiors of intermediate and massive stars. We further investigate the

Surface abundances of CNO in Galactic O-stars: a pilot study with FASTWIND

Context. Rotational mixing is known to significantly affect the evolution of massive stars; however, we still lack a consensus regarding the various possible modeling approaches and mixing recipes

Carbon line formation and spectroscopy in O-type stars

Context. The determination of chemical abundances constitutes a fundamental requirement for obtaining a complete picture of a star. Particularly in massive stars, CNO abundances are of prime

Surface abundances of ON stars

Context. Massive stars burn hydrogen through the CNO cycle during most of their evolution. When mixing is efficient or when mass transfer in binary systems occurs, chemically processed material is

Observational effects of magnetism in O stars: surface nitrogen abundances ,

Aims. We investigate the surface nitrogen content of the six magnetic O stars known to date as well as of the early B-type star τ Sco. We compare these abundances to predictions of evolutionary

Chemical abundances of fast-rotating massive stars. II. Interpretation and comparison with evolutionary models

Aims: Past observations of fast-rotating massive stars exhibiting normal nitrogen abundances at their surface have raised questions about the rotational mixing paradigm. We revisit this question

The MiMeS Survey of Magnetism in Massive Stars: CNO surface abundances of Galactic O stars

The evolution of massive stars is still partly unconstrained. Mass, metallicity, mass loss and rotation are the main drivers of stellar evolution. Binarity and magnetic field may also significantly

Progenitor constraint using line ratios of the CNO elements in supernova remnants

Unveiling the nature of progenitors is crucial for understanding the origin and the mechanism of core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae (SNe). While several methods have been developed to derive

The puzzle of the CNO abundances of α Cygni variables resolved by the Ledoux criterion

Recent stellar evolution computations show that the blue supergiant (BSG) stars could come from two distinct populations: a first group arising from massive stars that just left the main sequence

Observational manifestations of early mixing in B- and O-type stars

The helium and nitrogen enrichment of the atmospheres of early B-type stars during the main sequence (MS) evolutionary phase is re-analysed. It is confirmed that the effect depends on both the aget

Quantitative Spectroscopy of Deneb

Context. Quantitative spectroscopy of luminous BA-type supergiants offers a high potential for modern astrophysics. Detailed studies allow the evolution of massive stars, galactochemical evolution,

Presupernova Evolution of Rotating Massive Stars. II. Evolution of the Surface Properties

We investigate the evolution of the surface properties of models for rotating massive stars, i.e., their luminosities, effective temperatures, surface rotational velocities, and surface abundances of

The VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: constraints on stellar evolution from the chemical compositions of rapidly rotating Galactic and Magellanic Cloud B-type stars

Aims. We have previously analysed the spectra of 135 early B-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and found several groups of stars that have chemical compositions that conflict with the

Quantitative spectroscopy of ba-type supergiants

Helium and Carbon Abundances in Late-B and Early-A Supergiants

The abundances of carbon and helium were determined for representative late-B and early-A supergiants based on the Cl lines (9078, 9089, 9095, 9112) in the near-IR, Cll lines (4267, 6151), and the He

Improving stellar parameter and abundance determinations of early B-type stars
