It is shown that the α‐amino‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐methyl‐4‐isoxazole propionate (AMPA)‐type glutamate receptor subunit GluR1 is present on cultured microglia and this findings suggest direct microglial excitation via glutamate receptor pathways.

Reactive morphology of dividing microglia following kainic acid administration

This study uses robust and quantitative techniques to better understand microglial cell division, morphology, and population dynamics, which are essential for the development of novel therapeutics that target microglia.

Neurotransmitter signaling in the pathophysiology of microglia

How altered neurotransmission following acute insults or chronic neurodegenerative conditions modulates microglial functions is still poorly understood.

Glutamate induces directed chemotaxis of microglia

Microglia in the brain possess dynamic processes that continually sample the surrounding parenchyma and respond to local insults by rapidly converging on the site of an injury. One of the chemotaxic

Microglial glutathione and glutamate: regulation mechanisms

Current knowledge regarding microglial GSH and its regulation is extended, and contributes to the understanding of microglia neurotoxicity and neuroprotection.

Microglia in Glia–Neuron Co-cultures Exhibit Robust Phagocytic Activity Without Concomitant Inflammation or Cytotoxicity

The functional effector state of microglia is primed for phagocytosis but not inflammation or cytotoxicity even after kainate exposure that triggers death in the majority of neurons.

Neuronal Hyperactivity Disturbs ATP Microgradients, Impairs Microglial Motility, and Reduces Phagocytic Receptor Expression Triggering Apoptosis/Microglial Phagocytosis Uncoupling

It is demonstrated that the efficiency of microglial phagocytosis critically affects the dynamics of apoptosis and urge to routinely assess the microglia phagcytic efficiency in neurodegenerative disorders.

Potassium channel expression and function in the N9 murine microglial cell line

This work optimized the cell culture and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the endotoxin of gram-negative bacteria, mediated stimulation of microglial activation that results in subsequent nitric oxide (NO) release and analyzed mRNA expression of >80 potassium channel pore-forming subunits and their regulatory subunits in both LPS-treated and untreated microglia.

Intracellular signaling in M‐CSF‐induced microglia activation: Role of Iba1

Iba1, a macrophage/microglia‐specific calcium‐binding protein, was identified by the group and was shown to be involved in the Rac signaling pathway, and a novel signaling pathway in which Rac is activated, dependent on PLCγ and Iba1 is introduced.

ATP mediates rapid microglial response to local brain injury in vivo

Extracellular ATP regulates microglial branch dynamics in the intact brain, and its release from the damaged tissue and surrounding astrocytes mediates a rapid microglia response towards injury.

Functional plasticity of microglia: A review

A role of CNS microglia as a source of defense cells in the CNS capable of carrying out certain immune functions autonomously is supported, which may lead to a redefinition of the often cited “immune privilege” of the brain.

Phagocytic properties of microglia in vitro: Implications for a role in multiple sclerosis and EAE

Comparative in vitro studies of phagocytosis by peritoneal macrophages and microglia have shown that the two kinds of cells respond differently to regulatory molecules, and it is concluded that they have different innate properties.

Extracellular ATP or ADP Induce Chemotaxis of Cultured Microglia through Gi/o-Coupled P2Y Receptors

Results strongly suggest that membrane ruffling and chemotaxis of microglia induced by ATP or ADP are mediated by Gi/o-coupled P2Y receptors.

Involvement of the Neurotensin Receptor-3 in the Neurotensin-Induced Migration of Human Microglia

The use of RT-PCR, photoaffinity labeling, and Western blot analysis, demonstrates that the neurotensin receptor-3 is functional and mediates the migratory actions of neurotENSin.

Chemokines induce migration and changes in actin polymerization in adult rat brain microglia and a human fetal microglial cell line in vitro
