We present new spectroscopic observations of the diffuse Milky Way satellite galaxies Antlia 2 and Crater 2, taken as part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5). The new observations approximately double the number of confirmed member stars in each galaxy and more than double the spatial extent of spectroscopic observations in Antlia 2. A full kinematic analysis, including Gaia EDR3 proper motions, detects a clear velocity gradient in Antlia 2 and a tentative velocity…

Measuring the Mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud with Stellar Streams Observed by S 5

Stellar streams are excellent probes of the underlying gravitational potential in which they evolve. In this work, we fit dynamical models to five streams in the Southern Galactic hemisphere,

S 5: The Orbital and Chemical Properties of One Dozen Stellar Streams

We report the kinematic, orbital, and chemical properties of 12 stellar streams with no evident progenitors using line-of-sight velocities and metallicities from the Southern Stellar Stream

Proper Motions, Orbits, and Tidal Influences of Milky Way Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies

We combine Gaia early data release 3 astrometry with accurate photometry and utilize a probabilistic mixture model to measure the systemic proper motion of 52 dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite

Signatures of Tidal Disruption of the Hercules Ultrafaint Dwarf Galaxy

The Hercules ultrafaint dwarf galaxy (UFD) has long been hypothesized to be tidally disrupting, yet no conclusive evidence has been found for tidal disruption owing partly to difficulties in

Discovery of the Magellanic Stellar Stream Out to 100 kpc

The Magellanic Stream (MS)—an enormous ribbon of gas spanning 140° of the southern sky trailing the Magellanic Clouds—has been exquisitely mapped in the five decades since its discovery. However,

Revisiting Antlia 2’s Effect on the Outer Disk

Antlia 2 is the lowest surface-brightness satellite galaxy to our Milky Way that was discovered using data by the Gaia Mission, in the second data release (DR-2). Previous publications suggest that

Variable Stars in the Giant Satellite Galaxy Antlia 2

We report 350 pulsating variable stars found in four DECam fields (∼12 deg2) covering the Antlia 2 satellite galaxy. The sample of variables includes 318 RR Lyrae stars and eight anomalous Cepheids

The accretion history of the Milky Way – II. Internal kinematics of globular clusters and of dwarf galaxies

We study how structural properties of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies are linked to their orbits in the Milky Way halo. From the inner to the outer halo, orbital energy increases and

Chemical and stellar properties of early-type dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way

Early-type dwarf galaxies (ETDs) are the end-points of the evolution of low-mass galaxies whose gas supplies have been extinguished. The cessation of star formation lays bare the ancient stellar

An LBT view of the co-rotating group of galaxies around NGC 2750: Deep imaging and new satellite candidates

Context. Some galaxies such as the Milky Way and Andromeda display coherently rotating satellite planes, posing tensions with cosmological simulations. NGC 2750 has emerged as an additional candidate

Antlia 2’s Role in Driving the Ripples in the Outer Gas Disk of the Galaxy

We employ the earlier published proper motions of the newly discovered Antlia 2 dwarf galaxy derived from Gaia data to calculate its orbital distribution in the cosmologically recent past. Using

Dynamical Histories of the Crater II and Hercules Dwarf Galaxies

We investigate the possibility that the dwarf galaxies Crater II and Hercules have previously been tidally stripped by the Milky Way. We present Magellan/IMACS spectra of candidate member stars in

The Missing Satellites of the Magellanic Clouds? Gaia Proper Motions of the Recently Discovered Ultra-faint Galaxies

According to LCDM theory, hierarchical evolution occurs on all mass scales, implying that satellites of the Milky Way should also have companions. The recent discovery of ultra-faint dwarf galaxy

Crater 2: An Extremely Cold Dark Matter Halo

We present results from MMT/Hectochelle spectroscopy of 390 red giant candidate stars along the line of sight to the recently discovered Galactic satellite Crater 2. Modeling the joint distribution

Gaia DR2 proper motions of dwarf galaxies within 420 kpc

A proper understanding of the Milky Way (MW) dwarf galaxies in a cosmological context requires knowledge of their 3D velocities and orbits. However, proper motion (PM) measurements have generally

Detection of the Milky Way reflex motion due to the Large Magellanic Cloud infall

The Large Magellanic Cloud is the most massive satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, with an estimated mass exceeding a tenth of the mass of the Milky Way1–5. Just past its closest approach of about 50

The edge of galaxy formation - II. Evolution of Milky Way satellite analogues after infall

In the first paper, we presented 27 hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of galaxies with total masses between 5 x 10(8) and 10(10) M-circle dot. In this second paper, we use a subset of these

The southern stellar stream spectroscopic survey (S5): Overview, target selection, data reduction, validation, and early science

We introduce the southern stellar stream spectroscopy survey (S5), an on-going program to map the kinematics and chemistry of stellar streams in the southern hemisphere. The initial focus of S5 has

Revised and New Proper Motions for Confirmed and Candidate Milky Way Dwarf Galaxies

A new derivation of systemic proper motions of Milky Way satellites is presented and applied to 59 confirmed or candidate dwarf galaxy satellites using Gaia Data Release 2. This constitutes all known

Deciphering the Kinematic Structure of the Small Magellanic Cloud through Its Red Giant Population

We present a new kinematic model for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using data from the Gaia Data Release 2 catalog. We identify a sample of astrometrically well-behaved red giant (RG) stars
