The Syrian regime—and to a certain extent modern Syria in the broader sense—is the handwork of Hafez al-Asad. His thirty-year autocratic rule (before which he also had wielded considerable influence in the regime of his predecessor) has made distinguishing between the president and the state almost impossible.
