We surveyed 1.75 deg2 of sky near Neptune to an R-band 50% detection efficiency of 25.8 mag (corresponding to radii of about 17 km for an assumed albedo of 0.04). We discovered one new outer satellite, Psamathe (S/2003 N1), about 20 km in radius with a distant retrograde orbit and moderate eccentricity. Until 2003 Neptune was only known to have two satellites that exhibited orbital signatures indicative of capture. Both of these, Triton and Nereid, are unusual when compared to the irregular…

We report the discovery of 12 new satellites of Jupiter, giving Jupiter 79 known satellites. The new finds are between 23rd-24th mag in the r-band and 1-3 km in diameter assuming dark albedos. Nine…
Irregular Satellites of the Giant Planets
The irregular satellites of the outer planets, whose population now numbers over 100, are likely to have been captured from heliocentric orbit during the early period of solar system history. They…

THE IRREGULAR SATELLITES: THE MOST COLLISIONALLY EVOLVED POPULATIONS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The known irregular satellites of the giant planets are dormant comet-like objects that reside on stable prograde and retrograde orbits in a realm where planetary perturbations are only slightly…

Discovery of 12 satellites of Saturn exhibiting orbital clustering

Physics
The discovery of 12 irregular satellites of Saturn is reported, along with the determinations of their orbits, indicating that most of the irregular moons are collisional remnants of larger satellites that were fragmented after capture, rather than being captured independently.

Neptune's Story
It is conjectured that Triton was captured from a heliocentric orbit as the result of a collision with what was then one of Neptune's regular satellites, thus accounting for that satellite's highly eccentric and inclined orbit.
