ABSTRACT Classical and Type II Cepheids are used to reinvestigate specific properties of theGalaxy.A new TypeII reddening-freeCepheid distance parameterizationis formulatedfrom LMC Cepheids (OGLE), with uncertainties typically no larger than 5–15%. Adistance to the Galactic centre of R 0 = 7.8 ± 0.6 kpc is derived from the mediandistance to Type II Cepheids in the bulge (OGLE), R 0 = 7.7±0.7 kpc from a distanceto the near side of the bulge combined with an estimated bulge radius of 1.3 ± 0.3kpc…

Analysis of galaxy kinematics based on Cepheids from the Gaia DR2 Catalogue

To construct the rotation curve of the Galaxy, classical Cepheids with proper motions, parallaxes and line-of-sight velocities from the Gaia DR2 Catalog are used in large part. The working sample

DISCOVERY OF A PAIR OF CLASSICAL CEPHEIDS IN AN INVISIBLE CLUSTER BEYOND THE GALACTIC BULGE

We report the discovery of a pair of extremely reddened classical Cepheid variable stars located in the Galactic plane behind the bulge, using near-infrared (NIR) time-series photometry from the

A lack of classical Cepheids in the inner part of the Galactic disc

Recent large-scale infrared surveys have been revealing stellar populations in the inner Galaxy seen through strong interstellar extinction in the disk. In particular, classical Cepheids with their

A three-dimensional map of the Milky Way using classical Cepheid variable stars

A map of the Milky Way in three dimensions, based on the positions and distances of thousands of classical Cepheid variable stars, shows the structure of the Galaxy’s young stellar population and allows us to constrain the warped shape of the galactic disc.

Into the Darkness: Classical and Type II Cepheids in the Zona Galactica Incognita

The far side of the Milky Way’s disk is one of the most concealed parts of the known universe due to extremely high interstellar extinction and point-source density toward low Galactic latitudes.

First detection of the field star overdensity in the Perseus arm

Aims. The main goal of this study is to detect the stellar overdensity associated with the Perseus arm in the anticenter direction. Methods. We used the physical parameters derived from Stromgren

The spiral structure of the Galaxy revealed by CS sources and evidence for the 4:1 resonance

We present a map of the spiral structure of the Galaxy, as traced by molecular carbon monosulphide (CS) emission associated with IRAS sources which are believed to be compact H ii regions. The CS

An eclectic view of our Milky Way galaxy1

The nature of our Milky Way galaxy is re-examined from an eclectic point of view. Evidence for a central bar, for example, is not reflected in the distribution of RR Lyrae variables in the central

CONCERNING THE CLASSICAL CEPHEID VIC WESENHEIT FUNCTION'S STRONG METALLICITY DEPENDENCE

Evidence is presented which supports findings that the classical Cepheid VIC period Wesenheit function is relatively insensitive to metallicity. The viability of a recently advocated strong

Galactic rotation curve from the space velocities of selected masers

Based on currently available observations of 28 maser sources in 25 star-forming regions with measured trigonometric parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities, we have constructed the

The Discovery of Cepheids and a Distance to NGC 5128

We discuss a new distance to NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) based on Cepheid variables observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. Twelve F555W (V) and six F814W (I) epochs of cosmic-ray-split WFPC2

Cepheid parallaxes and the Hubble constant

Revised Hipparcos parallaxes for classical Cepheids are analysed together with 10 Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-based parallaxes. In a reddening-free V, I relation we find that the coefficient of log

The Cepheids of Population II and Related Stars

The Type II Cepheids include most intrinsic variables with periods between 1 and about 50 days, except for the classical Cepheids and the shortest semiregular variables of type M. The Type II

Cepheids as Distance Indicators

This review attempts to summarize the various ways of determining Cepheid reddenings and luminosities and the zero points of the Cepheid period‐luminosity and period‐luminosity‐color relations. The

The Araucaria Project: The Distance to the Sculptor Group Galaxy NGC 55 from a Newly Discovered Abundant Cepheid Population

We have detected, for the first time, Cepheid variables in the Sculptor Group SB(s)m galaxy NGC 55. From wide-field images obtained in the optical V and I bands during 77 nights in 2002-2003, we have

The distance to the Galactic Centre based on Population-II Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars

Context. The distance to the Galactic centre (GC) is important for determining the distance scale in the Universe. The value derived by Eisenhauer et al. (2005) of 7.62 ± 0.32 kpc based on the orbit

The Distance Scale for Classical Cepheid Variables

New radii, derived from a modified version of the Baade-Wesselink (BW) method that is tied to published KHG narrowband spectrophotometry, are presented for 13 bright Cepheids. The data yield a

The effect of metallicity on Cepheid magnitudes and the distance to M33

We present the results from a multi‐epoch survey of two regions of M33 using the 3.5 m WIYN telescope. The inner field is located close to the center of the galaxy, with the outer region situated

Assessing potential cluster Cepheids from a new distance and reddening parametrization and Two Micron All Sky Survey photometry

ABSTRACT A framework is outlined to assess Cepheids as potential cluster members from readilyavailable photometric observations. A relationship is derived to estimate colour excessand distance for
