The results demonstrate that the acquisition of skilled movement induces a reorganization of neural circuitry within motor cortex that supports the production and refinement ofskilled movement sequences, showing the robust pattern of anatomic and physiological plasticity that occurs within the corticospinal system in response to differential motor experience.

The data indicate that both environmental enrichment and skilled reach training experience can differentially modify expression of motor maps during development, and this work is the first to demonstrate this in rats.
Distinct roles for motor cortical and thalamic inputs to striatum during motor skill learning and execution

Biology
Silencing the inputs in rats trained on a task that results in highly stereotyped and idiosyncratic movement patterns shows distinct roles for motor cortex and thalamus in the learning and execution of motor skills and suggests that their interaction in the striatum underlies experience-dependent changes in subcortical motor circuits.

It is shown that synaptic connections in the living mouse brain rapidly respond to motor-skill learning and permanently rewire, and that stabilized neuronal connections are the foundation of durable motor memory.

Medicine
Based on neurophysiological studies, it is apparent that corticospinal plasticity is involved in restoration of locomotion after training, but the neural mechanisms underlying restoration of lost voluntary motor function are not well understood and translational neuroscience research is needed so patient-orientated rehabilitation protocols to be developed.

Evidence that motor map topography reflects the capacity for skilled movement, motor skill learning induces reorganization of motor maps in a manner that reflects the kinematics of acquiredskilled movement, and the role of motor map plasticity in recovery of motor function after brain damage is discussed are reviewed.
Strengthening of horizontal cortical connections following skill learning
Rats were trained for three or five days in a skilled reaching task with one forelimb, after which slices of motor cortex were examined to determine the effect of training on the strength of horizontal intracortical connections in layer II/III, and this work shows that skill learning is accompanied by changes in thestrength of connections within adult rat primary motor cortex.
Cortical Synaptogenesis and Motor Map Reorganization Occur during Late, But Not Early, Phase of Motor Skill Learning
It is proposed that motor map reorganization and synapse formation do not contribute to the initial acquisition of motor skills but represent the consolidation of motor skill that occurs during late stages of training.
Motor Learning-Dependent Synaptogenesis Is Localized to Functionally Reorganized Motor Cortex
This is the first demonstration of the co-occurrence of functional and structural plasticity within the same cortical regions and provides strong evidence that synapse formation may play a role in supporting learning-dependent changes in cortical function.
