The Australian Plate and the Indian plate, initially formed from the breakup of Gondwana, became the Indo-Australian Plate in the Middle Eocene some 45–40 million years ago as both plates amalgamated. This amalgamation was a consequence of the cessation of spreading at the mid-oceanic ridge in the Indian Ocean that separated the two plates (Liu et al. 1983; Royer & Coffin 1992).
