Reports on experiments recently performed in Vienna [Erhard et al, Nature Phys. 8, 185 (2012)] and Toronto [Rozema et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 100404 (2012)] include claims of a violation of Heisenberg's error-disturbance relation. In contrast, we have presented and proven a Heisenberg-type relation for joint measurements of position and momentum [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 160405 (2013)]. To resolve the apparent conflict, we formulate here a new general trade-off relation for errors in qubit…

Quantum rms error and Heisenberg's error-disturbance relation

Reports on experiments recently performed in Vienna [Erhard et al, Nature Phys. 8 , 185 (2012)] and Toronto [Rozema et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109 , 100404 (2012)] include claims of a violation of

Experimental Test of Heisenberg's Measurement Uncertainty Relation Based on Statistical Distances.

The relation reveals that the worst-case inaccuracy is tightly bounded from below by the incompatibility of target observables, and is verified by the experiment employing joint measurement in which two compatible observables designed to approximate two incompatible observables on one qubit are measured simultaneously.

Measurement uncertainty relations: characterising optimal error bounds for qubits

An operational interpretation of the error bounds is provided and some of the first experimental tests of associated error tradeoff relations are discussed, explaining the concepts and steps taken in the construction of optimal joint approximations of pairs of incompatible observables.

Tight qubit uncertainty relations studied through weak values in neutron interferometry

In its original formulation, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle describes a trade-off relation between the error of a quantum measurement and the thereby induced disturbance on the measured object.

Verifying Heisenberg’s error-disturbance relation using a single trapped ion

An experimental test of one of the new Heisenberg’s uncertainty relations using a single 40Ca+ ion trapped in a harmonic potential is reported, providing the first evidence confirming the BLW-formulated uncertainty at a single-spin level.

Single-qubit measurement of Heisenberg uncertainty lower bounds for three incompatible observables

Being one of the centroidal concepts in quantum theory, the fundamental constraint imposed by Heisenberg uncertainty relations has always been a subject of immense attention and challenging in the

Implications and applications of the variance-based uncertainty equalities

In quantum mechanics, the variance-based Heisenberg-type uncertainty relations are a series of mathematical inequalities posing the fundamental limits on the achievable accuracy of the state

Deriving tight error-trade-off relations for approximate joint measurements of incompatible quantum observables

The quantification of the "measurement uncertainty"aspect of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle - that is, the study of trade-offs between accuracy and disturbance, or between accuracies in an

Experimental test of tight state-independent preparation uncertainty relations for qubits

The well-known Robertson-Schroedinger uncertainty relations miss an irreducible lower bound. This is widely attributed to the lower bound's state-dependence. Therefore, Abbott \emph{et al.}

Measurement uncertainty relation for three observables

In this work we establish rigorously a measurement uncertainty relation (MUR) for three unbiased qubit observables, which was previously shown to hold true under some presumptions. The triplet MUR
