Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.
Explanation:Why are these stars moving so fast?Shown above is a time-lapse movie ininfrared light detailing how stars in the centrallight-year ofour Galaxy have moved over the past eight years. The yellow mark at the image center represents the location of a peculiarradio source namedSgr A*. If these fast stars are held to theGalactic Center by gravity, then the central object exerting thisgravity must be both compact and massive. Analysis of thestellar motions indicates that over one million times the mass of ourSun is somehow confined to a region less than a fifth of a light-year across. Astronomers interpretthese observations as strong evidence that thecenter of our Galaxy is home to a very massiveblack hole.
