病気じゃなくて病名の話。
私の学生時代の記憶では、「糖尿病」と言う漢字の病名の起源は、明治期日本でドイツ語「Zuckerharnruhr」を翻訳してできた、と言うもの。医療系の人はわかるように、Zuckerツッカー=糖、harnハルン=尿。ruhrは基本は赤痢という意味で、ここでは「流れ出る」的な意味だとか（今調べた）。明治期日本の医学教育が、原則としてドイツ医学を模範として構成されたことは、いうまでもない事実だと思う。つい最近まで医療の現場では、ツッカー、ハルンに限らず、バッサー、エッセン、kot、ステルベンなどとよく使っていた。体温をKTと書いたり。「カルテ」は今でもカルテだし。ちなみに「メス」はオランダ語。
つまり、「糖尿病」が、ギリシャ語由来の英名「Diabetes mellitus」の直訳っぽくない理由は、ドイツ語からの翻訳だったから、というわけである。納得のいく説明だ。
日本糖尿病学会などを中心に、この古き由来のある病名を変更しようという動きがあった。「ダイアベティス」にしようとのこと。国際病名に合わせようとのことだ。
そういえば、「統合失調症」に完全に呼称変更に成功した旧「精神分裂病」だって、ドイツ語schizophreniaの翻訳だ。schizoが「分裂する」、pheniaが「精神」だとのこと。ドイツ語なんてもういらん、ってとこがあるのかな。とは言えこちらは国際病名がschizophreniaなんだけど。
実際のところ、現代ではドイツでもzuckerharnruhrなんて言わず、diabetes mellitusの方が普通に使うらしい。

「ダイアベティス」に呼称変更すると、中国とは同じ病名で会話（筆談）できなくなる。まあどうせ国際会議は英語だからいいのかもしれん。
昔は中国では同じ病気を、消耗性口渇を表す「消渇」と言っていたらしい。20世紀から中国の医学文献でこの病名「糖尿病」になったようだから、おそらく孫文などが活躍していた頃、日本留学組が本国に持ち込んだのだろう、と推察する（根拠はない）。
で、ここから本題。問題は、英語版Wikipedia（https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_diabetes）には、「糖尿病という言葉はインドのmadhumeha (蜂蜜尿）という言葉を翻訳したもので、今は韓国や日本もこの言葉を借用している」って感じで書いてある。

さらにさらに、その根拠となる引用文献14は、韓国語のwebsite（http://www.docdocdoc.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=132745）である。
‘단 오줌(sweet urine)’을 뜻하는 인도말인 ‘맏후메하(Madhumeha)’는 중국, 우리나라, 일본의 의학에 그대로 영향을 미쳐 지금도糖尿病이라 쓰고 잇다. 하지만 중국어로는 [tangniaobing], 우리말로는 [당뇨병], 일본말로는 とうにょうびょう[tounyoubyou ]라고 쓰고, 발음한다.

I decided to pursue training and build a career in this space.It’s not an easypath—there are regulations, long hours of study, and the constantneed to keep up with global standards. ButI’ve also learned that thisis a career whereyour workhas a directimpacton people’s lives, even ifyourname never appears in thespotlight.
Sometimes I wonder if others alsostrugglewith the same doubts I had when startingout.Isit worth the effort?Will there be opportunities? From my experience,yes—this industryis growing, andwith the right guidance and certification, the opportunities are there.
I guess I’m writing this entryas a smallreflection andmaybe encouragement for anyone feelinglost in their career. Sometimes thepathyou’ve never considered can turn intothe most meaningfulone.
