Assessingcivilization probabilities

I'm emphasizing the slow emergence of intelligentlifeonEarth, which suggests that the odds ofany habitableplanet developing acomplexcivilization might beaslowas a fewpercent.

Belowis a very speculative chart thatbasedon what we know aboutEarth’s long, windingpath fromsimplelife to a “civilizedsociety” and our limited observations of nearby exoplanets—gives somefun, made‑uppercentage chances for a few of our best candidate exoplanets. Remember: Scientists havenot yetfoundany proof oflife (let alone advancedcivilizations)onany exoplanet. Thesenumbers are just playful estimates to helpyou think about theideas!

Speculative Chances of Finding an AdvancedCivilizationon Nearby Exoplanets

Exoplanet EstimatedLikelihood of a CivilizedSociety

Proxima Centauri b ~2%

TRAPPIST-1 e ~1.5%

TRAPPIST-1 f ~1%

TRAPPIST-1 g ~1%

LHS 1140 b ~0.5%

HowDid We (Very Roughly) Guess TheseNumbers?

Earth’s Example:

OnEarth, life beganassimple single‑celled organisms and took billions of years to evolve into a species that builtcomplex societies. This longjourney suggests that—even if aplanetis in the “habitablezone” (where liquid water could exist)—developing an advanced, civilizedsociety might be rare.

Nearby Exoplanets:

Proxima Centauri b:

Thisis the closest exoplanet to us. Even thoughitsstar (Proxima Centauri)is ared dwarf that sometimes sendsout strongflares (which might harmlife),its closeness makesitone of ourmost interesting candidates. That’swhy we giveit a slightly higher guess (~2%).

TRAPPIST-1 System (e, f, g):

Theseplanets are part of agroup orbiting a verycoolstar. Their environments might be challenging (for example, they could be tidally locked, meaningone sidealwaysfaces thestar), so the chance of acomplex, advancedcivilization might be abitlower.

LHS 1140 b:

Thisplanetis promising in some ways butis alittle fartherawayand around a dimmerstar, so our playful estimateis evenlower.

AFinalNote

All of thesepercentages are extremely rough guessesbasedon whatlittle we understand about the conditions forlife andintelligence. Scientists useideaslike the Drake Equation to think about these chances—but until we have concreteevidence, thesenumbers remain just forfun and imagination.

Enjoy exploring theseideas—and remember, spaceis full of mysteries waiting to be discovered!

evaluating the Drake Equation'svalue

Clarifying the Drake Equation

OK, let me see. The Drake Equationisn't a precise formula;it'smore of a guiding heuristic that tackles numerous uncertainties regarding extraterrestrialcivilizations.

Assessing the Drake Equation

Thinking through the Drake Equation, I’m evaluatingits conceptualnature, its uncertain parameters, andits criticism to concludeonits reliabilityas an accurate predictivemodel.

Understanding the Drake Equation

I’m mappingout the Drake Equationas a conceptual guide, detailingits parameters, which are oftenbasedon estimates or opinions, to evaluateits reliability for predicting extraterrestrialcivilizations.

The Drake Equationis a famous formula thatwas created to help scientists think about the manyfactors involved in estimating thenumber of detectable extraterrestrialcivilizations in ourgalaxy. However, when welookat the equation closely, we see thatitismore of a conceptualframework or heuristictool than a precise, predictive formula.Let’sbreak downwhy:

The Drake Equation

The equationis usually writtenas:

𝑁

=

𝑅

×

𝑓

𝑝

×

𝑛

𝑒

×

𝑓

𝑙

×

𝑓

𝑖

×

𝑓

𝑐

×

𝐿

N=R

×f

p

×n

e

×f

l

×f

i

×f

c

×L

Where:

𝑅

R

: The averagerate ofstar formationper year in ourgalaxy.

𝑓

𝑝

f

p

: The fraction of thosestars that haveplanetary systems.

𝑛

𝑒

n

e

: The averagenumber ofplanets that could potentially supportlifeperstar withplanets.

𝑓

𝑙

f

l

: The fraction of thoseplanets wherelife actually develops.

𝑓

𝑖

f

i

: The fraction ofplanets withlife where intelligentlife evolves.

𝑓

𝑐

f

c

: The fraction ofcivilizations that develop technology that releases detectablesignals into space.

𝐿

L: The length oftime suchcivilizations release detectablesignals.

Why the Drake EquationIsMore of a Guideline Than a Precise Formula

Uncertain Inputs:

Well-Known Parameters:

Somefactors,like

𝑅

R

(star formationrate) and

𝑓

𝑝

f

p

(fraction ofstars withplanets), have become better known through modernastronomy.

Highly SpeculativeFactors:

The parameters related to the development oflife andintelligence

𝑓

𝑙

f

l

,

𝑓

𝑖

f

i

,

𝑓

𝑐

f

c

, and

𝐿

L—arebasedon very limited data. For example,Earthis theonlyplanet we know wherelifehas developed, so we have no way to compare or derive a statistically robust estimate for thesefactors. This means that thevalues chosen for these parameters are largely subjective estimates or educated guesses.

Wide Ranges of PossibleValues:

Because many of thesefactors are not well-constrained, ifyouchangeone of themore uncertain parameters even slightly, thefinal estimate for

𝑁

N (thenumber ofcivilizations) can varyby many orders ofmagnitude. This wide range shows that the equation canlead to very differentoutcomesbasedonpersonal or theoreticalassumptions.

Heuristic, Not Predictive:

The Drake Equationwas never meant to provide a preciseanswer. Instead,it servesas a way to organize our thinking about what conditions might be necessary for the development of extraterrestrialcivilizations. It encourages discussion about the relative importance of differentfactors andhighlights where our scientific knowledgeis limited.

Is the Drake Equation Accurate orMore Opinion-Based?

Accurate?

In thesense ofbeing a strict mathematicalmodel with well-defined inputs and predictableoutputs, the Drake Equationis not accurate. Its accuracyis limitedbythe extreme uncertainties in several ofitskey parameters.

Opinion-Based?

Many of the terms in the equation, especially those concerning theevolution oflife andintelligence, arebasedon opinion, interpretation, and the single example ofEarth. Therefore, while thestructure of the equationis logical, thenumbersyou put intoit (and hence thefinal result) are oftenmore reflective of our current opinionsand assumptions than of robust empirical data.

Conclusion

The Drake Equationis a valuabletool for framing the question of extraterrestriallife. It helps scientists and enthusiastsbreak down acomplex problem into smaller, more manageable questions. However, because several ofitsfactors are highly uncertain and subject topersonal interpretation, itismore of a conceptual guide—or even a way to stimulate discussion—than a formula that provides a definitive, accurate prediction of thenumber of extraterrestrialcivilizations.

Insummary, while the Drake Equationis useful for thinking about the variousfactors that mightlead to the emergence of acivilization, itsoutputs should betakenas highly speculative estimates rather than precise measurements.

CONSIDERATIONSON REPRESENTATIVEGOVERNMENT

By John Stuart Mill

Chapter X—Of the Mode of Voting.

The pollingplaces should be so numerousas to be within easyreach of every voter, and no expenses of conveyance,at the cost of the candidate, should be tolerated underany pretext. The infirm, and theyonlyon medical certificate, should have the right of claiming suitable carriage conveyanceat the cost of thestate or of the locality. Hustings, poll clerks, and all the necessary machinery of elections, should beat the public charge. Notonly the candidate should not be required, he should not be permitted to incurany but a limited and trifling expense forhis election.Mr. Hare thinksit desirable that a sum of £50 should be required from everyonewhoplaceshisnameon the list of candidates, to prevent personswho have no chance of success, and no real intention ofattemptingit, from becoming candidates in wantonness or from merelove of notoriety, and perhaps carrying off a few votes which areneeded for the return ofmore seriousaspirants. Thereisone expense which a candidate orhis supporters can not help incurring, and whichit can hardly be expected that the public should defray for everyonewhomay choose to demandit—that of makinghis claims known to the electors,by advertisements, placards, and circulars. Forall necessary expenses of this kind the £50 proposedbyMr. Hare, ifallowed to be drawn upon for these purposes (it might bemade £100 if requisite), ought to be sufficient. If thefriends of the candidate choose togo to expense for committees and canvassing, there are no means of preventing them; but such expensesout of the candidates's ownpocket, orany expenses whateverbeyond the deposit of £50 (or £100), should beillegal and punishable. If there appearedany likelihood that opinion would refuse to conniveatfalsehood, a declarationonoath or honor should be required from every member,on takinghis seat, that he had not expended, nor would expend, money or money's worthbeyond the £50, directly or indirectly, for the purposes ofhis election; and if theassertion were proved to befalse or the pledge to have been broken, he should be liable to the penalties of perjury.Itis probable that those penalties,by showing that the Legislaturewas in earnest, would turn the course of opinion in the same direction, and would hinderit from regarding, ashas hitherto done, thismost serious crime againstsocietyas a venial peccadillo. Whenonce this effecthas been produced, thereneed beno doubt that the declarationonoath or honor would be considered binding. [6] "Opinion tolerates afalse disclaimeronly whenit already tolerates the thing disclaimed." Thisis notoriously thecase with regard to electoral corruption. Therehas never yet been, among political men,any real and seriousattempt to prevent bribery, because therehas been no realdesire that elections should not be costly. Their costlinessis an advantage to thosewho can affordthe expenseby excluding a multitude of competitors;and any thing, however noxious,is cherishedas having aconservative tendency, ifit limits theaccess toParliament to rich men. Thisis a rootedfeeling among our legislators of both political parties, andis almost theonlypointon whichI believe them to be reallyill-intentioned. They care comparativelylittlewho votes,as longas theyfeelassured that none but persons of their own class can be voted for. They know that they can relyon the fellow-feeling ofone of their class withanother, while the subservience of nouveaux enrichiswho are knockingat the door of the classis astill surer reliance; and thatnothing very hostile to the class interests orfeelings of the richneed be apprehended underthe most democratic suffrage,as longas democratic persons can be prevented frombeing elected toParliament. But, even from their ownpoint ofview, this balancing ofevilbyevil, instead of combininggood withgood,is a wretched policy. Theobject should be to bringtogether the best members of both classes, under such a tenureas shall induce them to layaside their class preferences, and pursue jointly thepath tracedby thecommon interest, instead ofallowing the classfeelings of the Many to have fullswing in the constituencies, subject to the impediment of having toact through persons imbuedwith the classfeelings of the Few.

Title: The BlackSamurai - A Tale of Yasuke

Prologue

Thesun sank behind the horizonas thelast vestiges oflight bathed theJapanese countryside in awarm, goldenglow. Yasuke, a tall, muscular Africanman withskinas darkas midnight, knelt in the courtyard of Nobunaga's castle, tending tohis duties. Though he had traveled a long and treacherouspath toreach thismoment, hisjourney had just begun.

Chapter 1: A WorldAway

In a small villageon theMozambique coast, a young Yasuke lived an ordinarylife, unaware ofthe extraordinarydestiny that awaitedhim. Capturedby slave traders and torn fromhishomeland, he endured a grueling voyage across theIndianOcean, finally arriving in the bustling port ofGoa,India.

Itwas there that Yasuke'sfate took an unexpected turn when hewas purchasedby Jesuit missionaries. In their service, he learned about Christianity, new languages, and the ways of the Western world.

Chapter 2: TheLand of theRising Sun

As a loyal servant to the missionaries, Yasuke accompanied themon theirjourney toJapan, aland of mystique and intrigue. The beauty of theland, the complexity ofits customs, and the elegance ofits people captivatedhim. As the first African toset foot inJapan, heattractedattention andcuriosity fromall thosewho encounteredhim.

Chapter 3: The Encounter

InKyoto, the capital of feudalJapan, Yasuke'slifechanged forever when he metOda Nobunaga, one ofthe mostpowerful and influential daimyos ofthe time. Nobunagawas captivatedby the African's physical prowess, intelligence, and uniquebackground. Seeing potential in Yasuke, Nobunaga decided totakehim intohis serviceas asamurai.

Chapter 4: ThePath of theWarrior

Yasuke's transformation from a slave to asamuraiwas fraught with challenges. He had to adapt to the rigorous training, strict code of honor, and the intricacies ofJapanesesociety. Despite these obstacles, Yasuke's strength, resilience, anddeterminationallowedhim toexcel, earning therespect ofhis fellowsamurai and the trust of Nobunaga.

Chapter 5: The UnfoldingWar

As Nobunaga sought to unifyJapan underhis rule, Yasuke foughtbyhis side in numerousbattles. The Africansamurai'slegend grew with eachvictory, asdidhis bond with Nobunaga.Together, they faced both triumph and tragedy, navigating the treacherouslandscape ofalliances and betrayals that defined the era.

Chapter 6: The Turning Tide

Yasuke's reputationas a skilled and loyalsamurai grew, asdidhis bond withLord Nobunaga. Thewarlordrespected Yasuke's dedication and resilience, a stark contrast to the treachery and self-serving ambitions that plaguedmanysamurai of the era.

Word of Yasuke's prowessreached other daimyos, andwhispers of the formidable blacksamurai began to spread across the provinces. The yearwas 1579, and theOda clan had just emerged victorious in the Battle of Tedorigawa. Yasuke had fought valiantly, his towering presence and unmatched strength strikingfear intothe hearts ofhis enemies.

As theOda clan continued to expandits territories, Yasuke'sfriendship with Nobunaga deepened, and he became a trusted advisor. He learnedmore aboutJapanese culture, studied the language, and embraced the customs ofhis newhome.

In the shadows, however, the tides ofchange werebrewing. Mitsuhide Akechi, once a loyalally, had grown disillusioned with Nobunaga's rule. The resentment smoldered withinhim, fueledby a series of perceived slights and politicalmaneuverings. Mitsuhide's ambition anddesire forpower began to cloudhis judgment.

Yasuke had sensed theshift in Mitsuhide's demeanor and grew increasinglywary of thesamurailord. However, loyalty to Nobunaga preventedhim from openly voicinghis concerns. He instead focusedonhis duties, ever vigilant and ready to protecthislordat amoment's notice.

Onefateful evening, theairwas heavywith the scent ofcherry blossoms,as theOda clan gathered tocelebrate their recent victories. Laughter and the clinking of sakecups filled theair. Unbeknownst to the revelers, Mitsuhide Akechi's treacherous planwas already inmotion.

As thesun rose, the first cries of battle rangout. Mitsuhide's forces had launched a surpriseattackon Nobunaga's residenceat the Honno-ji Temple. Thechaoswas overwhelming, asfriend turned againstfriend, and theair filledwith the acrid smell of smoke andblood.

Yasuke foughthis way to Nobunaga's side, his sword cutting through the traitoroussamurai withbrutal efficiency. Thetwo menmade theirfinal standtogether, back-to-back, against the relentlessonslaught.

In the end, however, they wereoutnumbered. As Nobunaga fell, mortally wounded, Yasuke continued tofight, but he toowas eventually captured. Mitsuhide Akechi, in atwisted display ofrespect, spared Yasuke'slife, acknowledging the loyalty and prowess of the blacksamurai. Yasukewas sent to the Jesuit missionaries, his future uncertain.

Yasuke'sjourney had been a remarkableone, from a slave in a foreignland to a trusted advisor andsamurai. Despitehis extraordinary circumstances, he remainedtrue tohimself andhis values.Hisstory of strength, resilience, and loyalty would be remembered and honored forgenerations to come.

Epilogue:

As thesunsetonanother day inJapan, the whisper of the wind carried the tale of the blacksamurai, Yasuke, across theland. It would weaveits way through the ages, inspiring countless others torise above adversity and carve their ownpaths through the storms oflife.

{ ..., "count": 10000000000000000000000000000000000000, ...}

String serialiaze(Ast.JsValuevalue) {    returnswitch(value) {case Ast.JsNull nullValue-> "null";case Ast.JsInt bigIntValue -> bigIntValue.toString();case Ast.JsArray arrayValue -> arrayValue.stream().map(v -> serialize(v)).collect(Collectors.joining(", ", "[", "]"));        // 他のJSONの木についても同様に処理        default -> throw new RuntimeException("cannotreach")    };}

Google

https://gigazine.net/news/20220606-google-cancelled-talk-caste-bias/

https://www.itmedia.co.jp/news/articles/1708/06/news034.html

Google’s IdeologicalEcho Chamber

https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/3914586/Googles-Ideological-Echo-Chamber.pdf

TL;DR

  • Google’s political biashas equated thefreedom from offense with psychological safety, but shaming into silenceis the antithesis of psychological safety.
  • This silencinghas created an ideologicalecho chamber where some ideas are too sacred to be honestly discussed.
  • The lack of discussion fostersthe mostextremeand authoritarianelements of this ideology.
    • Extreme:all disparities in representation are due to oppression
    • Authoritarian: we should discriminate to correct for this oppression
  • Differences in distributions of traitsbetween men and womenmay in part explainwhy wedon't have50% representation of women in tech and leadership.
  • Discrimination toreachequal representationis unfair, divisive, and bad for business.

Coronavirus:hopes from thediscovery of Sandro Giannini

10April, 2020

Bologna - From social media comesgood news aboutthe Coronavirus, perhaps decisive, whichhas scientific foundations andisdisseminatedby an authoritative doctor from Rizzoli of Bologna, Sandro Giannini.Hisis a highly qualified curriculum: Full Professor of Orthopedics andTraumatology and of Physical Medicineat theUniversity of Bolognasince 1989,director ofClinic Iat the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute and of the Gait AnalysisLaboratory, partner inEuropean projects and innational andinternational research programs, author ofmore than 600 presentationsatnational andinternational conferences andmore than 400 articles in ScienceCitationIndex journals.Hismessage gives greathope.Let's read:

“Idon't want toseemoverwhelming toyou, but I think I've demonstrated the cause of coronaviruslethality.Onlyat BlessedMatthew are there 2 cardiologistswho turnover 150 beds to do echocardium with enormous effort andoneis me. Terrible fatigue! However, of what somesupposed, but could not besure, wenow have the firstdata. Peoplego to resuscitation for generalized venous thromboembolism, especiallypulmonary. If this were thecase, resuscitations and intubations are of no use because first ofallyou have todissolve, indeed prevent these thromboembolisms. Ifyou ventilate a lung whereblooddoes notreach, itis notneeded! Infact 9out of10die. Because the problemis cardiovascular, not respiratory!Itis venous microthrombosis, not pneumonia that determines fatality!

Andwhy are thrombi formed? Because inflammation, asper schooltext, induces thrombosis through acomplex but well-known pathophysiological mechanism. Then? Contrary to what scientific literature, especiallyChinese, saiduntilmid-March,itwas that anti-inflammatories should not be used. Now inItaly anti-inflammatoriesand antibiotics are used (as in the influences) and thenumber of inpatients collapses. Many deaths, even 40 years old, had ahistory of highfever for10-15days thatwas not treated properly. Here inflammationhas destroyedeverything and prepared the ground for thrombi formation. Because themain problemis not thevirus, but the immunereaction that destroysthe cells where thevirus enters. Infact, our COVID departments havenever entered patients with rheumatoid arthritis! Because theymake cortisone, a powerful anti-inflammatory!

Therefore, hospitalizations inItaly are decreasing anditis becoming adisease thatis treatedathome.By taking care ofit wellathome, you avoid notonlyhospitalization, but also the thrombotic risk.Itwas not easy tounderstandit because thesigns of microembolism have faded, evenat the echocardium. But this weekend I compared thedata of the first 50 patientsbetween thosewhobreathe badly and thosewhodon't and thesituation appeared very clear. For meyou cango back to playing and reopen the business. Quarantine street. Notnow. Buttime topublish thisdata. Vaccine can arrive calmly. In America and otherstates that follow the scientific literature that calls for NOT to use anti-inflammatoriesis adisaster! Worse than inItaly. And they are old and cheap drugs. Coronavirus: speranzedalla scopertadi Sandro Giannini

10Aprile, 2020

Bologna –Dai social arrivauna buona notiziasul Coronavirus, forse risolutiva, che ha fondamenta scientificheed èdiffusadaun medico autorevole del Rizzolidi Bologna, Sandro Giannini.Ilsuo èun curriculum molto qualificato: Professore ordinariodi Ortopedia eTraumatologia edi Medicina Fisicapresso l’Universidi Bolognadal 1989,direttore dellaClinica Ipresso l’Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli e delLaboratoriodi Gait Analysis, partner in progettieuropei e in programmidi ricerca nazionali e internazionali, autoredipiùdi 600 presentazioni a congressi nazionalied internazionali epiùdi 400 articoli in riviste ScienceCitationIndex.Ilsuo messaggio dàgrande speranza.Leggiamolo:

“Non vorreisembrarvi eccessivoma credodi averdimostratola causa dellaletalità del coronavirus.Solo al BeatoMatteocisono 2 cardiologi che giranosu 150letti a fare ecocardio con enorme fatica eunosono io. Fatica terribile!Però,di quello che alcunisupponevano,ma nonne riuscivano a esseresicuri, ora abbiamo i primidati.La gente va in rianimazioneper tromboembolia venosa generalizzata, soprattutto polmonare.Secosì fosse, nonservono a nientele rianimazioni ele intubazioniperché innanzitutto devi sciogliere, anzi prevenire queste tromboembolie.Se ventiliun polmone doveil sangue non arriva, nonserve! Infatti muoiono 9su10.Percheil problema è cardiovascolare, non respiratorio!Sonole microtrombosi venose, nonla polmonite a determinarela fatalità!

Eperchési formano trombi?Perche l’infiammazione comeda testo scolastico, induce trombosiattraversoun meccanismo fisiopatologico complessoma ben noto.Allora? Contrariamente a quello chelaletteratura scientifica, soprattuttocinese, diceva fino a metàmarzo era che non bisognava usare antinfiammatori. Ora inItaliasi usano antinfiammatori e antibiotici (comenelle influenze) eil numero dei ricoverati crolla. Molti morti, anchedi 40 anni, avevanouna storiadi febbre altaper10-15 giorni noncurata adeguatamente. Qui l’infiammazione hadistrutto tutto e preparatoil terrenoalla formazione dei trombi. Percheil problema principale non èilvirus, mala reazione immunitaria chedistruggele cellule doveilvirus entra. Infattinei nostri reparti COVID nonsonomai entratimalatidi artrite reumatoide!Perche fannoil cortisone,un potente antinfiammatorio!

Pertanto, inItalia ospedalizzazionisi riducono estadiventandounamalattia chesicura acasa. Via quarantena. Nonsubito.Mailtempodipubblicare questidati. Vaccinopuò arrivare con calma. In America e altristati cheseguonolaletteratura scientifica che invita a NON usare antinfiammatori e’undisastro! Peggio che inItalia. Esono farmaci vecchi e checostanopochieuro.”
