Hey everyone. Idon't know where else to post this. Ineed towriteit down before I convince myself Iwas just hallucinating. I’m a grad student inJapan, doing fieldworkon forgotten local folklore. That'swhy Iwasout in theabsolute middle ofnowhere in Gunmaprefecturelast night.
My planwas to visit a tiny, dying village called Yomi-touge (notits realname) that supposedlyhas some unique traditions. Of course, my phonelostsignal hours ago, and mycar'sGPS, which I bought in 2015, decided to have atotal meltdown. Thesun went down. The mountainroads are narrow and winding,and a thick, soupy fogstarted to roll in. The kind of wet, heavyair that makesyoufeellikeyou’rebreathing water. Iwas completely, hopelesslylost.
After whatfeltlike an eternity of drivingat a crawl, Isawit. Alight. A single, brutallybright rectangle oflight cutting through the fog. Aconvenience store.One of thosebig chainsyou see everywhere, aFamilyMart or aLawson, I couldn't tell whichat first.I’ve neverfelt so relieved inmy life. I parked thecar and practically ran inside, thelittle doorchime sounding way too loud in the dead silence.
The insidewas…normal. Toonormal. Thelights were humming with a high-pitchedbuzz that drilled into my skull. The shelves were perfectly stocked. Theair smelled of cheapair freshener andsomething else…somethingsweet and hot,likeozone or burntsugar.
Hewas ayoungguy,maybe myage. Pale, drenched in sweat, with dark circles underhiseyeslike bruises. He moved with a painful stiffness,like every jointwas rusted. He muttered a "Irasshaimase…" without even lookingat me,hiseyes fixedon the counter.Hisarms were covered in these intricate, dark tattoos, winding fromhis wrists up underhis sleeves. I figured hewas just sick, oron a roughshift. Ifelt bad forhim.
I grabbed a can of coffee and went to the counter. "Sorry to botheryou," Istarted inJapanese, "I'm prettylost. Couldyoutell me where I am?"
He looked up, andhiseyesdidn't seem tofocuson me.Itwaslike hewas lookingat ascreen a few inches in front of my face. "We do not provide directional information," he said,hisvoice aflat, rehearsed monotone. "Will that beall foryou?"
Okay,weird, but whatever.Maybeit's store policy.As he reached for my coffee,his sleeve slid up. The tattoosonhisarm… they weren’t just pictures. For a split second, Iswear toGod, the lines ofinkshifted. They writhed,like tiny black worms underhisskin,and a patch ofhis forearmglowed with afaint, sicklyredlight. He flinched, asharp intake ofbreath, and quickly pulledhis sleeve down.
I just froze. I couldn’t have seen that, right? Iwas tired, myeyes were playing trickson me.
The personwho walked in… Idon’t know how to describe them.Itwas aman, I think. Hewas tall and wore an old, soaked trench coat. Buthis face…itwaslike my brain refused to processit.Itwasn't that he had no face,itwas that myeyes wouldslide right offit.Itwas ablur, aglitch, a 404error inhuman form.
Theclerkdidn't seem surprised. Hedidn't even seem to seehimas strange.His posture just became evenmore rigid. Theredglowonhisarm pulsedagain,brighter thistime, visible throughhis sleeve.
The facelessmandidn't speak. He just stood there. Theclerk, without aword, turned. But hedidn'tgo to the coolers. He kepthis back to theman, and heldouthis left hand,palm up. I heard asoft, wet, squelching sound. From a small, dark slit in the center ofhispalm that I hadn't noticed before, a smallcarton of strawberrymilk, the kindyou give tokids, just… emerged.Itwas producedout ofhis hand.Itwas wet with a clear, viscous fluid.
He placediton the counter. "Hereis the requested product," theclerk said,hisvoice straining. "The transactionis complete."
The facelessman picked up the strawberrymilk. He putit inhis coatpocket. And then he just… faded. Hedidn’t walkout the door. He dissolved into the hummingair,likeheat haze. A second later, hewasgone.
Theclerk letout a long, shudderingbreath and swayedonhis feet. He leaned heavilyon the counter,his face sheet-white. He looked utterly, existentially exhausted. Hesaw me staring, my mouth hangingopen, the can of coffeestill in my hand.
For the firsttime, aflicker ofsomething real,somethinghuman, crossedhis face.Itwaspure, undiluted terror.
"You… are not a regular customer," he whispered,hisvoice trembling. "Your… conceptis too stable. Please. Leave."
Ididn'tneed to be told twice. I threw a 500yen coinon the counter and ranout of there so fast I think I broke the sound barrier. Ididn't eventake my coffee. I justgot in mycar and drove, Idon't know in which direction, I just drove.
I'mat a servicestationnow, about 100kmaway. Thesunis coming up. I can't stop shaking.Itwasn't adream.I knowitwasn't. Because when Iwas fumbling for my keys, I realized I had accidentally grabbed thereceipt from the counter.

Refuting the “Israeli” Claims Regarding Evading their responsibility for the Massacre of the Gaza Baptist Hospital
Today, the “Israeli” Occupation Entityistrying to evade their responsibility for the crime ofbombarding the “Baptist” ArabNational Hospital in GazaCity, which theIsraeli” Occupation Forces (IOF) committedon the evening of Tuesday,17October2023. This heinous crimewas committed against innocentPalestinian civilians while taking the hospitalas a shelter from theflames of the “Israeli” brutal aggression, which leftnowhere safe in the besieged enclave.Itis necessary to affirm that, the Baptist Hospital belongs to the Anglican Episcopal Church in Jerusalem, andwas built beforethe occupation ofPalestine.
Itis obvious that the “Israeli” enemyhas been spreading lies since the verybeginning ofhis destructivewaron our people, when he with no singleevidence claimed that thePalestinianresistance killed children, cut offheads and raped women. In continuation of this series of lies, they tried to evade their crime,attributingit toone of theresistancefactions. Accordingly, we present some of the conclusiveevidence to prove the “Israeli” Occupation Entity responsible for this heinous crime:
1)Itis nosecret that the IOF, severaldays ago, threatened several hospitals in the Gaza Strip, contacting each hospital separately and requesting their evacuation and holding the hospitalsdirectors responsible for the consequences of neglecting the threats. Infact, there are dozens of clearstatements from the IOF spokespersons in this regard.
2) Since thebeginning of theongoing aggression, the “Israeli” armyhas ignored the principle of distinguishingbetween civilian and military targets. Thus, thebombardmenthas systematically targetedemergency services, ambulances, civil defense facilities, schools, mosques, and churches.
3) The IOF contacted thedirectors of 21 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, especially those are located in the Gaza and the North of Gaza governorates,most notably: (Al-Awda, the Indonesian, Kamal Adwan, the Kuwaiti, Al-Quds,and Al-Mamadani),asking them to evacuate immediately, given that the hospitals are located within the geographicalscope of “Israeli” military operations. In this regard, theofficial spokespersons for the IOF plus anumber of hospitaldirectors conducted interviewsliveonAl Jazeera, revealing the premeditated intention of the IOF to target hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
4)On 14October,2023,at20:30, the IOFfiredtwo shells towards the Baptist Hospital, and thenext morning they called the hospitaldirector, Dr. Maher الصفحة 2 من 3
Ayyad, saying tohim: “Wewarnedyoulast eveningwith two shells, sowhy haveyou not evacuated the hospital until thismoment?!” Following that call, The hospitaldirector contacted the bishop of the Evangelical Church inBritain and informedhim of the incident,who in turn contactedinternationalorganizations before sending the hospital amessage reassuring them that they could remain in the hospital. Yet withno warning, the IOF airstrikes returned,on Tuesday evening, to carryout the massacre against the hospital and the shelter-seekers of the displaced innocentPalestinian civilians.
5) Immediately after the massacre, the IOF spokesperson quickly published astatementonhis pageon the “X” and “Telegram” platformsat 21:17, which stated, “We hadwarned the evacuation of the Baptist Hospital andfive other hospitals so that theHamas terroristorganization would nottakeas a safehaven”. Thatstatementis a clear claim of this massacre, anditis documented with a “screenshot”imageattached tohis pageon Telegram, but he quickly deleted the post after seeing the massivescale of the massacre for the largenumber of victims, and the angryresponses of the Arab, regional andinternational communities. Lateron, he disavowedit, publishanother
statement denying that he hadissued the firststatement.
6) Before and during the event, theresistancefactionsdid notfireany missilesatthe occupied territories, the “Israeli” sirensdid not activate, and the Iron Dome missiles were not launched.Moreover, dozens of reconnaissance drones do not leave thesky of the Gaza Strip (365 km2 ), photographing and monitoring every inch around the clock. If the massacrewas due to theresistance’s missiles,as the “Israeli” Occupation Entity falsely claim,why would not they showone picture their claims?!
7) The “Israeli” Occupation Entity claimed that this massacrewas causedby a missile launchedby theIslamic Jihad. However, we would wonder how they could identify and distinguishbetween the missiles of theresistancefactions immediately after they were launched?!
8) The IOF military system documents and recordsall their operationsby day, hour, minute and second, and inall previous times their mediaoutlets cameout to announce or deny much less severe massacres than this massacre,so whatmade them waitmore than 4 hours before declaring their irresponsibility other than weaving scenarios of falsification, lies and deception?!
9)Itis obviously known that theresistance’s missiles are somewhat “primitive” and do not have the destructivepower that kills hundredsatonetime. And throughout thehistory of previous confrontations and the current confrontation, noresistance missilehas caused a tenth of thisnumber of “Israeli” deaths.
10) Theonly video scene documenting themoment ofthe explosion reveals that the mass offlame and the sound ofthe explosion are identical to other “Israeli”bombs throughout thedays of theongoing aggression, which withno doubt proves that the “Israeli”origin of the missile.

In conclusion, we are facing a genocidal massacre committedby IOF against children, women, and the elderly. The “Israeli” Occupation Entityis theonly responsible for the crime, no matter how much theytry to weave lies and fabrications togetaway withit,as theyalways do.

海外ファンタジーはなかなか翻訳されることがなく、翻訳されてもシリーズが途中で止まることも多い（マラザンみたいにね）。
ということで必然的に原書で読むことになるんだけど、同好の士の参考になればと思い、近年読んだものも評価をまとめた。
ファンタジーに限らず、出版社からちゃんと出版されるものと自費出版とがあって、近年は自費出版ものも質が大変向上している（とはいえ玉石混交）。ざっくり言うと、自費出版の大半はライトノベルのような内容とクオリティ。
アポカリプスものが大流行したSF界のような大きな傾向がファンタジーにあるかというと、ちょっとよくわからない。エピックファンタジーよりもダークなものが売れているように思う。
てことで近年読んだ本の中からいくつか紹介。あくまでも個人的な趣味です。
（後半疲れたので作品紹介は適当になった。これは一部でまだ大量にあるので時間があれば）
最of高。ダークが好きなら迷わず読め！！
Rukaという主人公はここ10年で読んだ小説の登場人物でトップクラスに好き。

母の教えに従いRukaは自分が殺した相手の墓を心の中に作り埋めてあげる。そのうち、心の中の墓場に幽霊が出てきて……
ダークでグロテスクなラヴクラフトを思わせる独特の世界観。とても良い。

「誰かが俺たちがくることを忠告しやがった。信者たちは空の部屋と違法の経典をいくつか残して姿をくらました。食べかけの皿、開きっぱなしの箪笥の引き出し。持てるものだけ持ってThe Miseryに逃げ込んだ。制服を着てたころ司令官が言ってたな。The Miseryに好き好んでいくのは追い詰められてヤケクソになってるか馬鹿野郎か欲に駆られた奴だけだって。あいつらはそれだけヤケクソになってるんだ。俺は10人くらいの馬鹿で欲深い男たちを集めて奴らを始末しに出かけた。」
武侠／ドラゴンボール／RPGの影響感じさせるシリーズ。とても好き。
madraというエネルギーを使えるものだけが様々な武力や能力を向上させることができる世界で、madraの適性がない少年Lindonは「空」と書かれたバッヂを胸に下げている。
ある日、天上人に命を救われた彼は、未来を見せてもらうが、そこで見たのはなんとかmadraを使えようになり幸せに生きる自分の姿だった。しかし、同時に村が神獣に破壊される運命であることも知ってしまう。村を救うために、死に物狂いの特訓が始まる。
・Founders三部作（未完結）：魔力をベースに構築されたスチームパンク世界。

ゴミを漁って生活しているRachelが、馬鹿でかい熊の化け物Mord（空も飛べたりする）の毛にくっついていた変わった生き物を発見してBorneと名付ける。Borneはすくすくと成長していき……
これまたダークな作品。
魔力を持ってると殺されてしまう世界で生まれた少年の話。ありがちだけどよくできてる。
「押しよせる帝国軍. 迎え撃つは空に浮かぶ要塞――女帝ラシーンが帝位に就いてから七年。以来マラザン帝国は多くの自由都市に侵攻し、大陸をまたぎ、海を越えて版図を拡大してきた。そして侵攻作戦がジェナバキス大陸に及んだ今、若き貴族将校パランは、秘められた魔道の力を知ることになる……空中要塞や異種属との攻防、兵士たちの野望と葛藤、そして渦巻く神々の思惑――猛り狂う運命の波濤を荘厳かつ凄惨に描き、現代最高との呼び声も高いファンタジイ群像劇」らしいよ。
少しだけ翻訳されてたけど、原書は完結済み。キャラクタードリブンではなく世界観を見せていくやつなので、合わない人には全く合わない。あと一巻が読みにくいので、そこを過ぎれば、なんとか行けるかな。
ちなみに、８巻まで読んで今は休憩中。
賛否あると思うけど、４巻の「House of Chains」までは読んで欲しい。
シリーズ名の通り、次々と登場人物が死ぬ。しかし、死んだ人物が普通に活躍したりもするので、その辺が後半になると弱い感じがしてくるところか。

結構読ませる。

ブコメとかに言いたいこともあるけれど、それよりNHKの全訳(https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20190924/k10012095931000.html)がなんかしっくりこないので、自分で訳してみたわ。

※1 これは「世界の指導者たちへ向けてのメッセージはありますか？」という司会からの質問を受けて始まるスピーチなので、話の相手方は大人たち全般ではないことに注意が必要よ。

この表を作る方法は以下のとおり。Macユーザならすぐ出来る。
1.まず、デフォルトのスマートプレイリストのTop25を表示する。そしてiTunesでの情報表示を、上のバーを右クリックしてタイトル、アーティスト、再生回数のみにチェックする。
2.全体を選択。iTunes.txtというファイル名で保存する。UTF-8で。
3.次のソースコードをコピペして、iTunes_list.rbという名前でiTunes.txtを保存したのと同じフォルダに保存する。

4.ターミナルを立ち上げ、cdと打ち込んだ後にスペースを空けて、iTunes.txtとiTunes_list.rbが入っているフォルダを、ターミナルのウインドウにドラッグアンドドロップする。その後returnキー。
5.ruby iTunes_list.rbと打つと、はてな記法で表組されたテキストが出てくるので、これをはてダにコピペすればおk。
もしアルバム名なども表示したかったら、まずiTunesで表示したいヤツを出して選択してiTunes.txtにコピペ。そして最初のprintfのところを適宜書き換えればいい。
WinユーザもRubyを動かせる環境がそろってる人なら、すぐに出来ると思う。
