「バカでもチョンでも」という慣用表現における「チョン」とは「朝鮮人」を指す差別用語である――
という言説に対し、
――「バカでもチョンでも」における「チョン」は朝鮮人のことではない
とする反論がなされて、いまではそれが定着している。
頭が悪い人に対する「ちょん」という蔑称は江戸時代から存在しているので、朝鮮人に対する蔑称とは別物だ、というのがその主張である。
まず、その頭が悪いという意味での「ちょん」の語源はどう語られているのか、と調べてもはっきりしない。
拍子木の「ちょん」という音に由来する説と、「ゝ（ちょん）」という踊り字に由来する説とが一応あるが、それがどうやって「頭が悪い」という意味になったかの説明は曖昧である。
公益役職などにおける役務を帳票に記す際、筆頭名主は役職名と姓名を記したのに対して、筆頭以下の同役に対しては「以下同役」の意味で「ゝ（ちょん）」と略記したうえで姓名を記したことに由来し、「取るに足らない者・物」を意味した。
などとWikipediaに書かれていて多少の納得感があるが、これは定説にはなっていないようである。
一方で「ちょん」の最古の用例として挙げられるのが、仮名垣魯文の『西洋道中膝栗毛』である。

しかし、「ちょん」の用例が、明治三年の『西洋道中膝栗毛』よりも遡らないのであれば、そもそも江戸時代からあったとする話は怪しいのではないか。
西洋道中膝栗毛での実際の表記は「馬鹿だの豚尾だの野呂間だの」で、「豚尾」に「ちょん」という読み仮名がついており、これは明らかに当て字である。
日清戦争（明治二十八年）の頃には、中国人の蔑称として「豚尾」「豚尾漢」などが使われていたらしい。
明治三年の時点で「豚尾」と「中国人」が結びついていたかは定かではないが、仮に「チョンは朝鮮人ではなく中国人の蔑称だった」なんてことになるとややこしさが極まってくる。
あるいは、「バカでもチョンでも」という表現は、明治や大正の頃でさえ広まっていなかったのではないか、という疑問もある。
調べてみても『西洋道中膝栗毛』の他に同時代の用例は出てこない。
Google Booksなどで検索してみても、どうも広く使われるようになったのは昭和に入ってからだという感じがする。
一方で、朝鮮人が「チョン」という蔑称で呼ばれるようになった時期はいつごろだろうか。
こちらの時期もはっきりとしないが、戦前に遡ることは確実である。
となると「バカでもチョンでも」が広まった時期と「朝鮮人＝チョン」が広まった時期とが接近してくることになる。
朝鮮人のことを「朝公（あさこう）」と呼んでいたのが「チョン公」となり「チョン」となった、というのが一応の定説である。
が、頭が悪いという意味の「ちょん」と掛けて朝鮮人のことを「チョン」と言うようになったという説もある。
そうであれば無関係どころかがっつり関係している気がするが…。
1960年代に自動露出のコンパクトカメラが発売されて「バカチョンカメラ」と呼ばれるようになった（ただしこれはVacation Cameraの日本語読みという説もある）。
一種の流行語のように気軽に「バカチョン」と言われるようになったのはこれ以降である。
それから1975年には三笠宮崇仁親王が言った「バカチョンカメラ」が差別用語とみなされて抗議を受けたという。
以降、散発的に抗議が起こり、「バカでもチョンでも」は差別用語である、とする認識が1980年代に形成されていった。
「バカでもチョンでもは朝鮮人のことではない」といったカウンターが盛んに言われるようになったのは1990年代からか。
以上から、「バカでもチョンでも」のチョンはやはり朝鮮人のことであった…などと強弁するつもりは、もちろんない。
ここで言いたいのは「『ちょん』という蔑称は江戸時代から存在していて朝鮮人に対する蔑称とは別物だ」という主張は怪しいぞということだ。
これらを明らかにしないかぎり「バカでもチョンでもは朝鮮人を意味しない」とは断言できないだろう。

いや、一部の版に「馬鹿だの豚尾だの」表記があったというのは、ちゃんと確認したことなんだよ。
ただ、当時はGoogle Booksで確認できたと思うのだが、いま検索しても見つからないので「信じてくれ」としか言いようがなくなっている。
メタデータ的に、たしかその版の刊行年がいちばん古かったので、本記事の本文ではこういう書き方になっているのだが。
まあそれも虚偽記憶じゃねえのと言われたら何も言い返せない。
楽しそうだったので2020年6月20日の上記有料配信を購入して視聴した。

(購入した理由はもう1つある。私はCOVID-19医療に最前線で関わってはいない医療従事者なので、このライブの目的を知り、同業者の支援につながるならば……という考えがあった。

(HiHi Jetsと美少年は例年出演していた夏のイベントがCOVID-19の影響で中止になったとのことで、猪狩くんはそれをくんで「おいでよ」を「心の」に変えて歌ったのだろう。
実は現在私が追っている他界隈で7月に開催するはずだったライブも中止になった。
「"心の"SUMMERSTATION」を聞いたとき、封じ込めていた悔しい気持ちが蘇って、同時に昇華された気がした。一視聴者の事情なんて知る由もないだろうけど、ありがとう。)
(どこが好きかはうまく表現できないけど、日テレ土曜21時ドラマの主題歌になりそうな曲調か。前述の他界隈で好きな楽曲にもある。あまり関係ないけど『ねぇもっと』を何故かKinKi Kidsの持ち歌だと思っていた。)
『Vanilla』(A.B.C-Z)で随所に入るハープの音が良きかな。思い返せば『青いイナズマ』のサビ前ハープも好きだった。
初めて一人でホテルのフレンチフルコース食べに行ったんだけど、
ほんとに1人でびっくりした。
コロナの影響で客足が減ってる&平日でほとんどのゲストが
朝食のみのプランだったらしい。
レストランまで連れてってくれて、中に入ってびっくり。
もともと大きいホテルじゃないから、レストラン自体も小さいんだけど
私だけフライングしたのかと思ったけど、違ったのね。
山上のプチリゾートホテルだけど、あいにくの曇天で外は真っ暗。
厨房を背に窓に向かって椅子をセッティングしてくれたけど、そのおかげで
中の景色が窓に映り込んでたんだよね。
私が食べ終わったタイミングで新しい料理や飲み物をサーブしてくれるけど
食べてる間中ずっと後で気配を伺ってるの見えてて、ちょっと頭を動かすと
すぐにさっと反応してくれる気配がして、最初は困った。
すごく丁寧だけど、私が気まずくないように程良い距離で話しかけてくれて
後の気配も次第に気にならなくなった。
私を見てセレブと思う人はいないと思うけど、大事なお客様として
丁重にもてなしてくれて、かつ、ぼっちで食べる私が寂しくないように
適度にかまってくれたのが本当に居心地が良かった。
普段和食ばっかりなので、フレンチの味がわかったかどうかに関しては
ただ、素人の私にもわかるくらいは、盛り付けとかも凝っていたし、
たった1人のゲストのためにいろんな料理を一皿に乗せてくれてて、
胃も心も満たされた気がします。
どれもすごく美味しくて、恥ずかしくてできなかったけど
いい意味ですごく裏切られた。
お金を払う意義と言うのをすごく感じた。
小旅行で、チェックアウトまでずっとホテルの中でごろごろしてた
んだけど、こーゆー形のことを「ステイケーション」と言うらしいね。

コロナが流行ったからできた言葉かと思ったけど、数年前からあったらしい。
コロナが流行る前にいちど温泉宿に泊まった時もすごく良かったし、
でもその時は食事なしのプランだったから、今回完全にステイしたわけだけど
好きな本とか仕事ちょっと持ち込んで完全にリラックスするだけの旅。
体力がなくなった今は丁度いい。
昔は詰めるだけ詰め込んで観光地回ってたし、食事も宿もやすさしか考えてなかったけど
今はとても無理ですから。。
毎回こんなホテルに泊まれるわけじゃないし、これからもほかに目的があれば
ドミトリー泊もいとわないけど、3回に1度はこんな体験が出来るように
仕事がんばるわ。
コロナで旅行全部キャンセルになって、何のために稼いでるのか分かんなくなったけど
私また頑張るわ。

ブクマで「バカチョンカメラ」を挙げてる人が何人もいるけど、逆だよ
差別的なので「バカチョンカメラ」という呼び方をやめてコンパクトカメラとかインスタントカメラと言い替えるようになったんだよ
「バカでもチョンでも」という言い方は当時もはっきりと差別のニュアンスはあったし、バカチョンカメラの普及によってそのニュアンスが薄れたという事実もないし今もそうでしょ
ただしバカチョンカメラのバカチョンが本当に「バカでもチョンでも」から来ているかはじゃっかんあやしくて、「vacation」をイタリア語風に読んだという説もある
これが本当だとすると、本来差別の意味がなかった言葉に差別のニュアンスが強引に見いだされたわけで、むしろ元増田のテーマとは正反対になるよね

How toBegin and End Email
Beginnings and endings are a challenge in mostactivities, but in email getting off to a good start and ending positively will strengthen the communication and increase understanding.
Start with a specific subject line.
Choose the better subject line in each pair below:
1. a. NewPhones
b. New Phone Installation: Your Action Required
2. a. Updateon Development of SalesModel
3. a. Summer newsletter
b. 10 GreatTips for Summervacation
Innumber 1, the second choice conveys a sense of urgency and action, whereas thefirst choice falls flat. In 2, the longer title focuses thereaderon which update the email is explaining. In 3, you don’t really have much choice.Who wouldtake a?
Next comes the greeting.
Examples:
• Hi, Fred and Lauri.
• Hi, team.
• Greetings, everyone
• Good morning, Sayed. (If Sayed thismessage in the morning)
• Jian, we arelooking forward to meeting younext week.
• To:Finance and Administration Team
• Toall employees:

The lastfive examples must beon a separate lineat thetop of themessage.All the others can be either a separate line orat thebeginning of a paragraph.
Choose the greeting that matches your relationship with thereader(s) and the purpose of themessage. “Hi” is friendly but too informal in certain situations—for example, inresponse to a request for a proposal. “Hello” is friendly and professional. “Hey”is too informal and slangy for mostmessages.
“To” followed by a pronoun like “all” or thename of agroup sounds professional butdoes not convey warmth. Warmth is required inallmessages, but please remember that you mustalways consider the position of the receiver.
Avoidgender-based greetings suchas “Ladies.” Even if thegroup you are writing it isall women, some among them willobject to this greeting.
Do not greet peoplewhosename is includedon theCc line.Only greet peoplewhosenames areon the To line of the email.
The punctuation of greetings is atopic for discussion.All the punctuation used in the list above is correct. Some people use “Hi team” and “HelloRobin” without the comma, but traditional writers retain the comma.The reason is that thesewords are in “direct address.” When we directly address thereader,as in “Hi, team” (or inthe example thatbegins with “Jian”) thename is separated from the otherwords by a comma.
“DearMr. Mathews” is followed by a colon in a business letter and in an email that replaces a business letter. However, it is also acceptable to use a comma after a
“Dear” greeting in a business email.
In a quick exchange of email withsomeone it is not necessary to continually greet yourreader. Compare such an exchange with putting the personon holdon the telephone. When you return to the phone call, you say, “Thanks for holding. I have the information: rather than “Hi Laurie.”
The last sentence of an email is like the lastwords of a phone call. Theymay be a quick signoff or a courteous close, dependingon the formality of the communication.

Avoid continually using “Have a great day!” or similarexpressionas your closing sentence. It became meaningless with constant use and it is a badfit with email that communicates a policy or serious announcement.
It is not wise to save a request for action or approval until the end of themessage. Emailreaders do not read to the end of amessage when theybelieve they have gotten the main point already.
A complimentary close—yes or no?
Business letters typicall end with phrases called “complimentary closes” suchas “Sincerelyyours,” “Best wishes,”and “Best regards.” A complimentary close is not required in email. However, business email often uses such a close to sound formal,look professional, or simply communicate courteously.
Examples:
• Sincerely,(the most formal of the list)
• Best regards, (professional)
• Warm regards, (professional and warm,as you would expect)
• Regards, (less friendly than the other 2 regards choices)
• With best wishes, (or) Best wishes, ( professional)
• Withthanks, (professional and grateful)
• Ciao! (friendly and rather informal)
• Cheers, (friendly)
Aword like “Greetings”does not belong in a close. Itmay be used in the last sentence, though, to greet otherswho might see themessage:
• Please give our greetings to Dr. Carr
• Greetings to your colleagues in Systems Research
Although people frequently use “Thanks”as a close, it is not standard, and careful writers avoid it. Do not use “Thanks inadvance”as a close, because many people find it presumptuous. Rather than “Thanks” or “Thanks inadvance,” create a better sentence, suchas “Thanks for considering my request.” Or use “Withthanks”as a complimentary close followed by a comma.
Advice for thosewho receive less-than-perfect Email. You will sometimes receive email that is less than perfect, which means you might feel abit offended by them. My advice to youon this is to get through them and leave them behind. Bring abrightsmile to your face and a kind tone to your emailreply. Forgive thosewhose writing was clumsy, abrupt, or annoying. They were merely experiencingmoments ofbeinghuman and imperfect.
