■近藤麻理恵と本に関する議論に潜む無視できない階級意識と人種差別

近藤麻理恵は一冊目の本である「人生がときめく片づけの魔法」が2014年にアメリカで出版されたときから社会現象であり続けている。「日本の片付けと整理の術」を詳しく記したその本は、コンマリ・メソッドまたは「Kondoする」と呼ばれる、持ち物に触ってときめきを感じる（it sparks joy）かで判断する片付け法を誕生させた。しかし、やはり近藤の人気が急上昇したのはNetflixで「近藤麻理恵とお片付け」（邦題：KonMari ～人生がときめく片づけの魔法～）が放送されてからだ。ところが、この人気の急上昇により本にまつわる予期せぬ騒動が発生した。著述家であり「WeNeed Diverse Books」（多様な人種の子供に向けて本を与える活動をする非営利団体）の創設者の一人でもあるエレン・オーを含むSNS上の大勢の人々によれば、近藤への反発には明確な人種差別と階級意識の要素が含まれているという。Bustle（訳注：原文の掲載サイト）はオーにコメントを求めた。

韓国系でありながら子供時代を日本で過ごし第一言語が日本語であるオーは次のように語る。「近藤麻理恵への反発が発生してからというもの、ずっと意図的に誤解している人々に嫌な思いをさせられています。最初は文化の違いのせいかと思いました。特に、翻訳によって生じる問題についての意識のなさです。アジアの言語は英語とはかなり違います。どうやってもうまく翻訳できない言葉もあります」。ところが、オーが「人々が意図的に近藤を誤解している」と確信するに至るまで長い時間はかからなかった。

小説家のアナカナ・スコフィールドはすぐさま近藤の本を捨てるやり方にSNSで憤慨したうちの一人だ。スコフィールドは「近藤麻理恵だかコンマリだかの本に関する意見に耳を貸すな」とTwitterに書いた。他の利用者たちもすぐに続いた。そのうちの一人であるジェニファー・ライトは「この女はモンスターだ」と既に削除されたツイートで記した。このツイートは「理想的には蔵書は30冊未満にしましょう」という吹き出しが書き足された近藤の写真に対する返信として書かれたものだ。ワシントンポストに掲載された書評家のロン・チャールズの「近藤麻理恵よ、おまえのトキメキお片付けは私の本の山には無用だ」をはじめ意見記事もいくつか出た。

しかしこの「理想」の蔵書数は30冊というのは、いったい何なのだろうか？この数字は、近藤がコンマリ・メソッドで自分の家を片付けたときに使ったものだ。「人生がときめく片づけの魔法」で、近藤は自分の蔵書は30冊にするようにしていると書いている。しかし、近藤は誰もがこの30という数字を使うべきだと言っているわけではない。重要なのは、近藤は一度も本をすべて捨てるべきだなどと言ったわけではないということだ。Refinery29のインタビューでケイト・ムンロは近藤に、ガラクタの山や、本で破裂しそうな本棚にときめきを感じる人はどうすればいいのかを尋ねている。近藤は次のように答えた。

家がちらかった状態でもそれで本当に快適なら、それは良いことです。なにもおかしくありません。その上で、それぞれの物に決まった場所を割りあてたり、それぞれの物がどれくらいの量あって、必要な量はどれくらいなのかを把握したりすることをおすすめします。こういう意識を持つことは大事だと思います。

オーは、アナカナ・スコフィールドが近藤についてのツイートの後で書いたガーディアン誌の記事を、自分の意見に合わせるために近藤の言葉を意図的に誤解している例の一つとしてあげている。「ときめき（spark joy）という表現が過剰に強調されていて、その言葉で近藤が本当に伝えようとしていることが置き去りにされています」。「ときめき」は実際には喜び（joy）と同じ意味ではなく、鼓動や興奮や動悸を意味する。この基本的なことさえ理解すれば、本は喜びだけでなく挑戦や動揺を読者に与えるべきだというスコフィールドの主張が無意味だということがわかるだろう。「ときめき」という言葉が意味するのは、本が読者に挑戦や動揺を与えてそれが良い反応をもたらすのならとっておくべきだということなのだ。

オーはさらにライトが削除されたツイートで近藤を「モンスター」と呼んだことについて言及する。「意図的な誤解は、近藤の助言はそもそも片付けをしたいと思っている人に向けられたものだという事実から目をそらすことから始まっています。片付けをしたくないなら、助言に耳を貸さなければ良いだけです」

「近藤への反発は、近藤の流暢でない英語や、独特の言葉づかいをからかうことまであらゆることに及んでいます」とオーは語る。「ときめきという概念を笑いの種にするたくさんの画像を見て、私の両親が話す片言の英語を意図的に誤解しておちょくってきた人たちのことを思い出さずにはいられませんでした」

今回の本を片付けることについての議論には、ある種の特権も絡んでいるとオーは語る。

「階級意識、エリート意識、たくさんの収納がある大きい家に住めるという特権。私には近藤への反発が何を根拠にしているのかはわからないけど、反発している人たちが特権的な立場にいるということはわかります」とオーは言う。「たくさんの本を持っていなければ賢い人間だとは言えないというエリート意識と経済的な階級意識です。かつて貧しかったころ、私が持っていた本は10冊もありませんでした。だから図書館は私にとって安らぎの場所だったんです」

以上の点について声を上げているのはもちろんオーだけではない。Twitter 利用者のジョナー・ヴェンは一連のツイートで、コンマリ・メソッドの本来の目的に対する一般的な無知についてこう書いている。「コンマリへの批判やネタ画像は、アジア、とりわけ日本の文化や影響への無知により、目立たないが本質的に人種差別的なものだ」

近藤への反発の人種差別的な側面についてSNS上で反応している人々は他にもいる。作家のカット・チョーはツイートで「有色人種をモンスターと呼ぶのはやめてください。既に社会の隅に追いやられている人たちを、人でなし扱いするような言葉を使わないで」と書いた。そして著述家のピューター・セレステは「アジア人の女性を不当な理由でからかうことに何の意味があるんだ？近藤麻理恵じゃなくてマーサ・スチュワートが相手だったとしてもこれ以上続けるのか？違うだろう」とツイートした。

確かに、本を捨てるという行為は一部の人々にとってかなり感情を動かされるものだし、本の一部をちぎると図書館や学校や非営利組織などに寄付して役立ててもらうこともできなくなる。しかし、とどのつまり近藤の助言に対する反発は、近藤とは関係がない。むしろそれは、一部の読書家が、自分の読書家としての自意識を維持するために必要だと考えている、本を所有するという行為を近藤が侮辱したという誤解に基づく怒りなのだ。

近藤を支持している読書家もたくさんいる。Twitter 利用者のアレクサンドラ・ダンカンはツイートで「驚くかもしれないけど、図書館員として家の本棚をコンマリ・メソッドで整理することを100%支持します」と書いている。

もしかしたら年明けは、物理的な片付けについてだけでなく精神的な整理についても完璧な時期なのかもしれない。読者の皆さんも、ぎゅうぎゅうに詰め込まれた本棚そのものと、本に書かれた内容とどちらにときめきを感じるのか、自分に問いかけてみてはいかがだろうか。
