Refuting the “Israeli” Claims Regarding Evading their responsibility for the Massacre of the Gaza Baptist Hospital

1)Itis nosecret that the IOF, severaldays ago, threatened several hospitals in the Gaza Strip, contacting each hospital separately and requesting their evacuation and holding the hospitalsdirectors responsible for the consequences of neglecting the threats. Infact, there are dozens of clearstatements from the IOF spokespersons in this regard.
2) Since thebeginning of theongoing aggression, the “Israeli” armyhas ignored the principle of distinguishingbetween civilian and military targets. Thus, thebombardmenthas systematically targetedemergency services, ambulances, civil defense facilities, schools, mosques, and churches.
3) The IOF contacted thedirectors of 21 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, especially those are located in the Gaza and the North of Gaza governorates,most notably: (Al-Awda, the Indonesian, Kamal Adwan, the Kuwaiti, Al-Quds,and Al-Mamadani),asking them to evacuate immediately, given that the hospitals are located within the geographicalscope of “Israeli” military operations. In this regard, theofficial spokespersons for the IOF plus anumber of hospitaldirectors conducted interviewsliveonAl Jazeera, revealing the premeditated intention of the IOF to target hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

For the past month, since the Islamic militants ofHamas took overthe Gaza Strip,Israelhas kept the main commercial crossing point at Karni shuttered, squeezing thelife out of the limp Gazan economy.Israel bans contact withHamas, andHamas seeksIsrael’s destruction, makingborder crossing etiquette more precarious than elsewhere.
Yet at this small crossing near the Egyptianborder on Wednesday, between mortar attacks byHamas and other militants, about 20 truckloads ofmilk products, meat, medicines and eggs passed fromIsrael into Gaza, part of the effort to keepbasic commodities reaching the 1.5 million Palestinians of the largely isolated strip. Most of the supplies are not humanitarian relief, but are ordered by Palestinian merchants from Israeli suppliers, relying on contacts built up over years.
The mechanics of the crossover manage to answerIsrael’s security needs while avoiding contact withHamas. At Kerem Shalom, Israeli trucks transfer their goods to what Israeli military officials describeas a “sterile” Palestinian truck. Driven by a carefully vetted Palestinian driver, the truck never leaves the terminal, carryingthe goods to the Palestinian side, where they are transferred onto ordinary Palestinian trucks that drive into Gaza.
Kerem Shalom, which means “vineyard of peace,” is surrounded by fences and concrete barriers. Itcan process only about 20 trucks a day, so it is reserved for products thatrequire refrigeration.
The hardier goods, whichmake up the bulk of the supplies, go throughanother crossing, at Sufa, to the north. About 100 Israeli trucks a day come fromIsrael, swirling up clouds of dust before dumping thousands of tons ofdry products, bales of straw and crates of fruit on “the platform,” a fenced-in patch of bakedearth. At 3 p.m. the Israeli suppliers leave. Like drug dealers picking up a “drop,”the Gaza merchants send in trucks from a gate on the other side andtake the products away.
Other productsmake their way into Gaza with virtually no human interaction. At thefuel depot at NahalOz, Israeli tankers pourdiesel,gasoline and cooking gas into Gaza throughpipes that run beneath theborder. And even at Karni, the main crossing that closed for normal operations onJune 12, the Israelis have adapted a 650-foot-long conveyor belt, which was previously used for gravel, to send in grain.
“It is better all around from a security point ofview that commodities go in,” said Maj. Peter Lerner of the Coordination and Liaison Administration, the Israeli military agency that deals with the civilian aspects ofthe Gazaborder. “More despair doesn’t serve anyone.”
Israeli officials cite security reasons for having shut Karni, the only crossing equipped to send containers into Gaza, or to handle exports out of the strip. “Karni was based on the concept oftwo sides operating together,” said Col. Nir Press, the head of the coordination agency.
Colonel Press noted that inApril 2006, a vehicle loaded with half a ton of explosives got through three of four checkpoints on the Palestinian side of Karni, and was stopped at the last security position by members of the American-backed Presidential Guard, loyal to the Palestinian president,Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah.
But the Presidential Guard is no longer there, having been routed, along with all other Fatah forces in Gaza, byHamas.
Instead, the militarywing ofHamas and other Palestinian factions have been firing mortar shells at Kerem Shalom. On Tuesday, 10 of them landed inand around the terminalastwo trucks ofmilk were passing. The crossing was closed for therest of theday. Hamas suspects thatIsrael wants to use Kerem Shalom to replace the Rafah crossing on the Egypt-Gazaborder, whichhas been closed sinceJune 9. The Palestinians had symbolic control at Rafah. At Kerem Shalom,Israelcan better supervisewho ?? and what ?? is going in and out of the strip.
“Kerem Shalom is a military post, a place from which Israeli tanksbegin their incursions into Gaza,” said Fawzi Barhoum, aHamas spokesman, justifying the mortar attacks. “Howcan we consider it a safe and legitimate crossing to replace Rafah?”
But when it comes tofood, rather than principle,Hamas is proving itself pragmaticas well. OnSunday, Palestinian merchants, trying to pressIsrael to reopen Karni, told the Israelis thatHamas had barred the import of Israeli fruit. But by Wednesday, the Israeli fruit was orderedagain. “Hamasdoes not want to lose the private sector,” a Gaza businessman explained.
Tellingly,the exposed Sufa crossing, through which most of thefood comes,has not been attacked with mortars so far. Without Karni, however, and with the smaller crossings operating on aone-way basis, Gazacan barely subsist. With hardly anyraw materials going in, and no products from Gazan farms, greenhouses and factories so far allowed out, Gaza’s tiny industrialbase is on the verge of collapse.
Hamas officials say they want to start negotiations withIsrael about reopening the formal crossings.Major Lerner said thatHamas had “a few things to do” first, including recognizingIsrael’s right to exist and freeing Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier captured andtaken to Gaza in araid more than a year ago.
But the ultimatetest ofpragmatism may come in September when the Hebrew calendar enters what is known in Jewish lawas a “shmita” year. Then thefields ofIsrael are supposed to lie fallow, and observant Jews seek agricultural products grown elsewhere. Before theHamas takeover,Israel’s rabbis had reached agreements with Palestinians to import vegetables from Gaza,Major Lerner said. Given the needs of both sides, it may still happen.
