気づけば複数のApple 製品を揃えないと「Apple 体験」は成立しない。この「ストレスのない世界」は、完璧な囲い込みの設計だ。

Apple Watch自体よりも、着目すべきはバンドの持つ「自己表現」だ。

A week after Democrats’ election loss, accusations have flown in every direction within their Party. Some fault President Joe Biden for an ego istic refusal todrop out of therace earlier. Someblame the Harris campaign for failing to servekey demographics and communicate a clearvision for the country. And someblame Americans, claiming that racism and sexism drove voters towardTrump.

These factors certainly exist, but we’remissing a largerpiece of the picture.

Over thesummer, I traveled to 46states in the U.S., creating aYouTube series highlighting slices oflife across the country. In conversations from my nearly three-monthroad trip, I spoke with Republicanswho were certain that inflation is entirely Biden’s fault and Democratswho, despite their frustrations with corporate profits and desires foruniversal healthcare, hoped for amore moderate candidate. From supporters ofall candidates, I heard a shockingamount of misinformation.

After combing through hundreds of hours ofinterview footage fromswing state Trump voters, Iam certain that,as muchas other factors influenced theoutcome of the election, our crumbling media landscape — whichhas caused arift in our democracy —is most toblame.

In the postwar period,news was dominatedby threemain channels, and because ofthe FairnessDoctrine, eachstation reported the same stories and covered multiple sides of eachissue.Viewers picked which channels they watchedmainly basedon their preferences fornews anchors’ personalities. Of course, this model hadits problems, but,at the end of the day,it meant that Americans worked with a sharedset of facts.

A sharedset of factsis notthe world welive intoday.

Throughout myinterviews, conspiracy theories were rampant, andon at leastfive separate occasions across separate states, Iwas told that Bill Gates tampers with ourfood, adding plastic to our fruits and vegetables tomake his medical investmentsmore profitable.

In conversations with voters, neither side seemed able toname many specific policyissues they cared about; everyone just seemed to repeat the words of theirfavorite pundits,podcast hosts, andinternet personalities.

Although this behavioris harmful, Idon’tblame everydayAmericans.Blame fallson the media that has ostracized, disillusioned, and misinformed them.

I firstsaw this trend withlow-wage workers in West Virginia,who — despitefalling inflation rates — have seen stagnated salaries and clear increases infood costs. Channelslike Fox News bred anger and resentment formany of them.

Take July of this summer, for example, when for the firsttime inhis presidency, prices actually fell under the Biden administration. Traditional media establishments rushed tocelebrate this victory, withone article fromCNN declaring, “The White House can finallycross out ‘inflation’on its list ofpresidential liabilities.” However,outside these bubbles, I observedmanyAmericans held a differentview.

In lateJuly, Iwas welcomedat a massive familyreunion in Tylertown, Mississippi, where oneTrump voter — a middle-aged, Black, familyman, pastor, andsoul food enthusiast —made this clear.

“When Igo in the grocery stores, and Igotta spend mylast toget groceries,you mean totell me I’m notgonnalook and seewho’sgonna vote to help me? I voted forTrump and I’d vote forhim again, because he put money in ourpocket,” he told me.

In their coverage,mainstream news organizations obsessover the Federal Reserve’s next rate cuts while failing toconnect with people concernedwith theirnext meals.With t itleslike “Vance:YoungAmericans ‘Are Becoming Paupers’ Due To Inflation, High Housing Costs,” siteslike The DailyWire had their fingerson the pulse ofAmerican sentiment, welcoming new readership from thosewho felt neglectedby traditional media.

This problemwas not just confined to the economy. While Biden’s mentalstate was deteriorating,liberal mediaoutlets seemed to under-cover these stories, shelteringhim from scrutiny ofhis declining capabilities, until theinfamous presidential debate.

Formerly trusted networksslowly made themselves indigestible to the polarizedAmerican public, and in 2024, for the third year in a row, a Gallup pollfound that more Americans indicated having “no trust” in the media than thosewho trustit a “great deal/fairamount”.

So where does the averageAmerican turn when thenation’s media cannot be trusted? Formany people,it was YouTube talk shows,Newsmax, andpodcasters suchas Joe Rogan.

While Democrats seek toblame various internal factors for this election’s loss, I cannot help but think ofJoe Rogan’s Trump endorsement, themany blind lies I heard from ordinary citizens across the country, and declining trust inAmerican journalism.

As Harvard students and members of highereducation institutions, we have a part to play in the problem.At Harvard’s Institute ofPolitics, thosewho denied the 2020 election results have been precluded from speakingat theJFK Jr. Forum. While thegoalis understandable,it shields students from understanding theAmericanviewpoints they represent.

There is adifference between platforming intentional andmanipulative misinformation and listening to and learning about where people are and what theybelieve.

As a pipeline tomainstream media,Harvard, andits future journalists, have to consider the audience they lose when theystay inside of their bubble and ignore theissues of everydayAmericans.

The disappearance of factual importance in our worldis alarming and dangerous, but if we,as aspiring journalists, politicians, andengaged citizens, want to betaken seriously in communicatingTrump’s threat to democracy, inflationary tariff policies, and soon, we oweAmerican voters that seriousness, too.

■ドミノピザ半額祭り

ピザサンドを前からずーっと食べてみたかったので、半額キャンペーンに乗じて初注文してみた。

普段なら到着時間5分なのに25〜45分待ちになってて草なのだ。

270円税込送料込で家まで配達してもらえるなんて有り難い。

対面で受け取りたくないのでDrop＆Goを選択。

しかし支払いにPayPayもauPAYもメルペイも使えないのはなぜ〜？

しかたないのでApple Payで決済した。

I just recently moved to a newarea inTokyo, I called a nearby clinic tomake a reservation (inJapanese) and pretty quickly into the conversation, the receptionist asked if I couldgo somewhere else instead. When I askedwhy,she clearly and blatantly said "theydon'ttake foreigners." Iwas shocked so I askedagain just tomake sure I heard rightand againshe said theydon'ttake foreigners.
When I accused theclinic of discrimination they tried to denyit and claim that "it's difficult to communicate with foreigners," though I've never had that issueat any otherJapanese speakingonly clinic or hospital.
If this were just abar orsomething I'ddrop it, butthe fa ct that aCLINIC can blatantly discriminateagainst patients seems insane to me. I'm not expecting much sadly, butis thereanywhere I can report them?
I'm paranoid about just leaving bad reviews because I've seen a first handcase ofsomeone getting suedover one.
UPDATE:
I called a "patientvoice" hotline for reporting these sort of things. I explained the situation and they said they would contact theclinic. They later updated me and said they were actually able totalk to the doctor, and he just doubled down and insisted theydid nothing wrong because "communication with foreignersis difficult." After that they basically could not doanything else other than offer sympathylol...

■過去イチでヤバイ PJを引き継いだ

弊社のビジネス創造部門的なところが作ったPJがあるんだが

どうもゴリゴリに炎上してるらしくて支援に入った

こういう仕事は割とあるんだがなかなかのヤバさだったので紹介したい

ちなみにサービスの内容は非常に良くてユーザーも万単位で付いているらしい

だからこそ炎上している

バックエンド 環境

バックエンドはAWS EC2で動作しているがログインアカウントは共通化されていてパスワードを全員で共有している

ユーザーを追加しようとしたら「そのような勝手な行為はセキュリティ上許可されていません」とのこと

本番環境とStagingはインスタンスが分かれているが運用は同じ方法

Staging上で5人ぐらいが作業しているが、ホームの下にそれぞれのユーザーが自分の名前でディレクトリを作って作業している

バックエンド システム

バックエンド側のシステムは詳細は伏せるが、某システムで動いている

仮にNode.js系だとすると、package.jsonがあってnpmrun installでインストールするのだが、普通にインストールしようとするとエラーになる

内容は依存関係で失敗しているのだが、本番も同じソースで動作している

動作させるにはnode_modulesをまるっとコピーして、とのこと

さっきの自分の名前のディレクトリ配下にコピーしてきて、適当なポート番号でサーバを立ち上げれば一応は動く

このため、新しいモジュールを入れようとすると依存関係で失敗するため、便利なモジュールがあってもインストールできないし

セキュリティアップデートも当てることはできない（現にバージョンがすごく古い）

バックエンド システム内容

ソースコードはGitHub 管理されているがセーブポイント感覚でcommitされているのでコミットログを見ても何が起きているのかさっぱり分からない

おまけにPRも使わずにmainにマージしまくっていてわけがわからない

加えてソースコードはコメントアウトの嵐でどこに何が書いてあるのかさっぱりわからない

データベースはPostgreSQLだが山ほどテーブルがあるのに外部キー依存は入っていないしVIEWも作られていない

まぁ、他にもテーブルを見ていくとアンチパターンのオンパレードで、EAV、ジェイウォークあたりは確認できたしHTMLやSQLが格納されているテーブルも見つけた

ソース上でクエリを作ってAPIを作っているが、ザッと見ただけでもインジェクションし放題の状態になっていた

フロントエンド システム

フロントエンドも詳細は伏せるが、いわゆるReact的なものを利用している

こちらは npmrun installでインストールできるし npmrun devでちゃんと動く

ローカルで動作するので非常に助かる

ただ前述の通りバックエンドはローカルで構築できないのでEC2を利用するしかなく、CORS対応のためのプロキシを自前で用意する必要があった

フロントエンド ソース コード

バックエンド同様にGitHub 管理されているが、管理しているだけ

バックエンドは5人ぐらいが利用しているが、ソースコードを編集するのは実質1人なのでコンフリクトはほとんど起こさないらしいが

フロントエンドは5人ぐらいが編集するのでコンフリクトしまくっている

解消するときにデグレすることが日常茶飯事でその都度Hotfixしている

コードもコメントアウトだらけなのに加えて、不必要なコードが大量にあるので可読性が著しく低い

（難しい処理を読み解いて追いかけていったら最終的に使われていない、などが大量にある）

2000行ぐらいあるコードとかChatGPTに突っ込んだら20行ぐらいになる予感がある

また、DBがご覧の状態なので取得されるデータも全然抽象化できておらず、コードが膨れ上がっている

例えばProductの一覧データをサーバから取得して、ユーザーがクリックしたProductをCartに投入するのだが、投入する情報はProductではなく、CartItemにする必要があるし

OrderするときはOrderItemにしてAPIを叩く必要がある

ほとんど同じ情報なのだが微妙に変わっていたりKey名が違っていたりするのでそれぞれ変換する

他にも数え上げればキリがないが、コピペして少しだけ改変している部分などが大量にあってバグがあるのかどうかすら判別できない

セキュリティ 課題

DBにHTMLやSQLが入っていると言ったが、調べて見るとDB から取得したHTMLをそのまま埋め込んで表示していたりした

SQLについてはフロントエンド側でSQL生成しており、そのテキストをAPIに送り込んでサーバ側で実行して貰った上で格納とかしていたので

「ここにDROP TABLEとか書けばTABLE消えるんですか？」

と聞くと

「そんなことする開発者はクビだなwww」

とか言われたのでことの重大さを伝えたが、まだ対処できていないようだった

認証等はOAuth2を使っていたので大丈夫そうだったが、本当に大丈夫かどうかは自信がもてない

今後の期待

システム内容はゴミのような状態だがサービス的には良いので、幹部やプロダクトオーナーからは追加要望が山盛り来ている

開発チームが「稼働が足りない」という理由で断ったので「じゃぁ支援して」ということで自分のところに来たのだが

「申し訳ないが、そもそもそういうレベルに無いし、全て作り直しが必要」

と伝えてもどうやら伝わっていない様子

ちなみに元々の開発チームは過去にもこんな感じでサービス作ってたらしいが売れないので問題になってなかった様子

ぱっと見は動いているように見えるのが厄介なところ

正直逃げたいところではある

■衝撃的だった曲10選

他に類を見ない、似た曲を探してもそれしかないような曲を10曲紹介するぜ！

『James Blake - Unluck』

James Blakeの1stは衝撃的だった。ジャンルはpostdubstepとかになると思うけど、この曲は異色すぎる。いまだに何拍子か分からない。昔ライブを観たことがあって、どうやってリズムをとって演奏するんだろうと思ったら、体を円を描くように回してリズムをとってたのも衝撃的だった。

『SOPHIE - LEMONADE』

音像がぶっ飛びすぎ。こういうプラスティックな質感の音作りは最近の流行りで、今となってはHyperpopなんてジャンルが出来たけど、結局はSOPHIEみたいな音が皆んな作れないから、わざと音を歪ませまくってるんじゃないかって個人的な考察。こういう音の曲、PC MUSIC周りのアーティストの曲を昔はBubblegum Bassなんて言われていたけど、浸透は特にしなかった。

『Hercelot - kit katfat cat chat』

サンプリングの鬼。"おもちゃ箱をひっくり返したような"とはこのこと。いったい何処からサンプル持ってきてるのか気になる。これだけのサンプルを1曲にまとめ上げるのはマジで狂気的。

『Jacob Collier -With TheLove In MyHeart』

鬼才Jacob Collierから1曲。ジャンルを超越しすぎ。ハイセンスなアイディアの押し売りみたいな曲。特に3:18〜からの展開は最高すぎる。

『Ary Warnaar x BenAqua - ANARCHY』

左右に振られまくってウネウネ動くベースが気持ち悪すぎる。

『TAEMIN - DripDrop』

K-POP から1曲。海外のプロデューサーに好き勝手に曲を作らせてて、割と面白い楽曲が多いK-POP。この曲もカテゴライズできないアレンジで、こういうハイクオリティな楽曲が何百何千万と再生されてちゃんと評価されてるのは、純粋に音楽ファンとして嬉しい。

『Pino Palladino + Blake Mills - Ekuté』

どんだけ乾いた音なんだ。ブラスにファズでもかけてるのか、まるでエレキギターを聴いてるかのよう。

『blackmidi - John L』

ジャンル的にはプログレになるんだろうけど、ここまで存在感があるのは凄い。次のアルバムも発売決まったし、本当に楽しみだ。

『Dos Monos - in 20XX』

異色すぎるJapanese HIPHOP ユニット Dos Monos。もちろん日本語ラップではあるが、やってることはラップという歌唱法を使ったプログレ。トラックの元ネタをいったい何処から持ってきているのか知りたい。

『imoutoid - PART2』

エディットの鬼。元ネタの「ダ・カーポ〜第2ボタンの誓い〜」のイントロのたった数秒間だけを使って、ここまでアレンジを展開させるのは本当に神業。
