OVA, 1988-1989, 6 eps

Awkward and absurd old-school beginning, but it gets better and better. Also characters are sometimes bit annoying and plain... But I liked (a lot during second half) the plot, universe mechanics and very decent ending.

TV Series, 2007-2008, 25 eps

At first incredibly boring and stupid (space jet fighter with arms and legs... took me a while to get used to it), but in the end, I really enjoyed it and some songs are actually very good. Although I still think that it's sometimes really stupid. And final episode seemed a bit forced.

For Macross fans it's a must see, for others as well if you can tolerate some silliness, and for rest it's recommended.

TV Series, 2000, 13 eps

Space opera at its best. Well executed plot, although not very surprising. Character development is slower considering the one from Crest of the Stars, but also very good. And then there are the space battles, strategy, plausible space travel technology... Top notch. All this is actually very similar to space battles from the Honorverse books, and that's a good thing.

Note: EN voice cast is horrible, totally changes feeling of many conversations. Go for JAP one, it's exceptionally good.

OVA, 2006, 1 ep

Neither goog, nor bad. Also this anime does not have much of relation with previous OVA. And if you hate clumsy and wierd CGI, stay away from this. But I enjoyed those 30 minutes.

Movie, 2007-2009, 7 eps

During first four episodes I was thinking: "It's good, but not my kind of anime, too many pointless scenes..." Then came the fifth episode, at first I was even more confused, but little by little everything started to make sense, masterpiece. And same goes for the last episode. PS: Don't forget to wait to credits end, or you might not understand the story at all.

TV Series, 2009, 50 eps

Hearth-taking fantasy anime with slow plot development, simple but nice animation and realistically written characters (no super-heros). Also dividing the plot into three timespans makes this anime a bit unique. And the less you know about the story (beware trailers and AMV), the better enjoyment you will get.
