Overall, I My Me! works fairly well. It sure hit the spot for me, as I wanted something relatively mindless, that was light, entertaining, cute and funny, and that's exactly what I got.
It's a short little pedophilic romance comedy, and this is where it takes a wrong turn in thematic regards, though at least we don't have to watch our teacher get it on with his target of affection.
The pedophilic aspects attempt to convey a morality that doesn't fit into society for a reason, and trying to espouse such primarily detracts from the anime because it does not or perhaps cannot justify itself as it unfolds, and that is why I My Me ends as plainly as it does instead of some significantly more controversial manner.
This is just a part of how I My Me is not very well done. In addition to the poorly executed plot, the animation is sloppy, and those far too appealing characters change their minds in a heartbeat because they're not well designed.
But, the series is enjoyable, and here's a probably why: I My Me very properly follows one of the formulae for appeal...
Strong, sensitive, kind, caring male hero (heroes?) with a burning passion.
Cute, always smiling, ditzy but not stupid, clumsy little cute girl, who strives hard to do her very best!
Some comic relief.
And all their friends! The strong girl, the babe, the distant one...
And, all of these characters, for some reason, just have so much appeal!
Its formula is sound, and it worked for me because I was in the mood for this kind of anime.
So, I'd recommend it to you on some levels, but don't expect any hidden meanings or depth or much aside from a cute little lovey-dovey romance which mixes in some loli situation and comedy, and you won't be disappointed, and may even enjoy yourself.
Sloppy animation
The animation, as I said, is sort of sloppy. Legs walking look awkward, for example.
The 'camera' focuses on some really strange spots at different points of the anime, such as this one notable conversation between a teacher and the students where we are placed under the table. Watching the conversation from below was very odd, and my best guess as to why they chose this angle is that our writers couldn't find the proper facial expressions at this point, something that unfortunately didn't seem all that rare in this anime.
The art is decent, otherwise. 2001 saw some much nicer artwork both in the fore and backgrounds.
Deep male voicing
The sound and music are decent. There are some very well done spots at least, and the overall sound effects are ok.
The seiyuu selected for the male lead is a bit too ... deep... I think... and just doesn't fit right. The kids also could have used better voice choices.
Entertaining, mindless plot that's poorly conveyed
The plot is ok, but the storyboard is horrible, and I suggest you not follow it if you're going to enjoy this. I found a lot of stupid ridiculous moments that I had to ignore to continue enjoying myself, as IMM is full of plot holes.
I also would have preferred a different outcome of several of the anime's choices. There is a lot of missed potential here, including the very disappointingly superficial exploration of gender. Kinda reminds me of Vandread in this regard, but moreso Green Green.
Characters? Who's them?
The characters are likable in that way that you can't help but like them because they're always smiling at you and waving and going 'hi don't you like me?', which could annoy some people, but I let myself fall for it.
They've little to no backgrounds that are evidenced through the course of the anime, and so their development is centered around the emotional traits that they are supposed to feel as the plot unfolds.
The biggest actual problem with their portrayal is how flimsy they are, evidenced primarily by how quickly they change their minds and sway in action from what they are saying with words. This and other issues results in little to no attachment to each other, aside from about 5 main characters.
In the end, for example, we see about 20 names listed on the screen in this odd emotional outburst, which ironically served more to highlight how few of the characters we actually got to know, and how shallowly we know those few.
Pretty bad, yet sorta good.
I'd highly recommend NOT watching this short and sweet anime if you're not specifically looking for a light romance-sort-of comedy-ish series.
It can be enjoyable if you're in the right mood as things fit fairly well together, and rather than hate it and yourself, it's possible to enjoy this and leave with a happy feeling.
But it's sort of drivel, and if you are hankering for an incredible romance story with some depth and meaning, you're going to be extremely disappointed.
