This preview will mostly be a comparison between the originalHunter x Hunter and the currently airing remake. A proper review will probably come once the show is over, and this entry will be changed to most likely a blog entry (though it will of course be linked in the review.)
Well then, since the newHunter x Hunter (which I will from here on forth call2011) is now done adapting everything that the original Anime (which I will call1999) adapted, I thought it would be nice to do a comparison between this version's first 75 episodes and1999's entire TV series and its OVAs, since both cover the exact same amount of content - ending at the same scene, at the same moment.
Hunter x Hunter (1999) was animated byNippon Animation and directed byFuruhashi Kazuhiro, famous for directing the entireRurouni Kenshin Anime, as well asGundam Unicorn.
Hunter x Hunter (2011) is animated byMadhouse and directed byKoujina Hiroshi, who has some previous experience in the Shounen department, but nothing really spectacular. His most famous work would probably beRainbow.
Art & Animation: First let's talk about1999. Now this version uses a very dark mood in both colouring and presentation during the TV series, but changes to a more childish and classic shounen style during the twoGreed Island OVAs. The details of it are very nice, for being an anime released in1999 it still looks good. It's not very impressive overall, but it manages to do an impressive job during the fights. It's clear by just looking at the animation style and its content that this was made for a more mature audience. But is that necessarily a good thing? Well, during the beginning of the show, it didn't fit very well, as the show had a more adventurous feelings. However, when the series reached the Yorknew Arc, it fit like a glove. Since the style was dark, and the Arc was dark (especially for a standard Shounen Jump title at the time) everything worked perfectly in setting atmosphere. However, when the series reached the twoGreed Island OVAs, there was a big noticeable change in both art and animation. The artstyle was comparable to the artstyle in2011, but animation quality was severly worse. This may very well be because by the time of release, this was when production studios started to go over to computer animating, instead of traditional handdrawn animating. The animation got stiff and lifeless, and that's sad considering that the final OVA was released a whole 5 years after the TV series, yet it looked worse.
Now for2011. Now this is one of the main things that most people have complained about.2011 is definitely much more colourful and brings a much more childish feeling than its original1999 version. However,2011 is much more pleasing to the eye than the 1999 version in some instances. There are some points in the show where I would prefer the original1999 version's artwork style, but in the end the2011 version is much more appealing to me as it gives me that adventure feeling the original version failed to give me. There are however some scenes where2011 can look dark, but the overall tone is always much "happy." This is a bit more of a self-preferences, so it's hard to say which one could be considered to be "the best" artstyle. If you like a darker tone,1999 wins, and if you want a more adventurous tone,2011 wins. But, when it comes to animation,2011 is clearly the superior version. While it may not look very impressive during all scenes,Madhouse manages to amp up the quality by a lot during the fight scenes. These fights are some of the best looking fights you will ever find in a Shounen. They added smoke, slow-mo effects, camera shakes, monochrome, and much more to make these fights have a much bigger bang to them.
So, despite the tone of1999, the clearly inferior animation quality of theGreed Island OVAs drags its value down a lot. The very well animated fights of2011 and its adventurous style makes it win this round.
Sound: The1999 soundtrack is one of the most atmospheric soundtracks I've ever heard, at least in the Shounen department. It fits the mood perfectly and has some tunes that I still go around whistling on. This soundtrack is something that will stick with you for quite some time. It is well composed and every song uses just the right instrument and fits every scene the music is placed in. Soundeffect wise, it's not very impressive. It uses a real weak sounding punch sound and theOVAs uses a really annoying summoning sound. And those are just the big things that I noticed, because other than that there's no real power. But, one of the biggest parts of the sound department is in voice acting, and it's... Ok-ish? Some voices are great and fit perfectly, like Gon and Kurapika. But other voices can sound pretty awkward or are forgettable. No one really stands out - but- they do their voicework as they should. Like I said, it might sound awkward or is forgettable, I still can't deny that the voices actually do fit.
The2011 soundtrack is a bit more rock-like at some times, a bit more of a typical Shounen at other times, but it still has some of these "adventure toned" songs in its soundtrack that are really fitting with the tone. Just like1999 it has some memorable themes, but with the lack of the atmosphere-building songs of1999, it fails to really leave an impact on you after you just watched something, but it still manages to wow you sometimes during certain scenes in the show. Biggest example would be during the Requiem scene in the Yorknew arc, when the song even overlapped and replaced the ending song for that episode. Soundeffects are a big plus here, as the fightscenes has big power behind their soundeffects. Background noises fits and there are always small details that you can barely hear, but you can still hear that they are there. Voice acting is good. Nothing spectacular, and the only real noteworthy voice performance is byNamikawa Daisuke, who voices Hisoka, as he does a really chilling performance.
So, which one's the winner? I'm actually gonna have to go with a tie here. While1999 has a great atmospheric soundtrack,2011 has better voice acting and soundwork. One can not work without the other, especially when you only think about the soundtrack and voice acting, the main two elements that makes up the sound department.
Story: Both1999 and2011 follow the same basic storyline: A young boy, Gon, wants to become a Hunter in hope of finding, as well as understanding the actions, of his father. Accompanying this is the "Kurapika Kurta Clan Revenge" sub-plot, along with a little bit of Killua and his family. The story itself isn't very impressive or groundbreaking for that matter, but it's good enough to make you want to keep on watching, as it does have a more mature way of portraying the story compared to other Shounens, both the1999 and2011 version. So, how are they on their own? Well let's see...
1999 took care of the story up to the end of the Greed Island Arc in 92 episodes. Whilst the pacing was pretty slow during the Hunter Exam Arc, due to fillers and creative choices, the pacing did improve later on. However, in theOVAs the pacing once again slowed down considerably. This is one of1999's biggest downfall, as the show could be quite a drag to watch. While this may not be a problem for older viewers, as Anime tended to more slow in the old days, this may very well be one of the biggest complaints the show gets from new viewers. But besides that, the Anime did adapt the Manga faithfully, even if it was ultimately left incomplete.
2011 took care of the story up to the end of the Greed Island Arc in 75 episodes. The pacing was increased a lot in this version, so much that some episodes in the Yorknew Arc and Greed Island Arc adapted as much as 4-5 chapters. That is a lot, considering that your average Shounen adapts approx. 2 chapters per episode. While some might say that the pace became too fast, I'd disagree, as the faster pace helps you a lot in paying attention to the show, as you won't get bored as easily. Sure, the slower pace of1999 may help in a lot of tension scenes, but the faster pace still manages to keep the tension intact. Madhouse also removed and/or rearranged a lot of scenes, which gives this version a more "fresh" feeling, for both the Manga and1999 viewers.
However one thing they both share in common is the Yorknew Arc, which is undoubtedly one of the best Shounen Arcs ever in both adaptations, even if it's primary focus is not on our main protagonist, Gon, but instead on Kurapika.
So which one's the winner? I would guess it should be pretty obvious; the faster pace of2011 helps this adaptation a lot, as the show in overall is more exciting to watch.
And besides that, since2011 is also adapting at least the Chimera Ant Arc, it already has more value to it, but I won't count that, since this comparison is only based on up until the end of the Greed Island Arc. So no handicap here!
Character: The characters ofHunter x Hunter is definitely the highlight of the entire show. All of them develop really nicely throughout the show (except Leorio, who just can't seem to catch a brake) and/or are defined by their characteristics very well. Gon is an enthusiastic but selfish kid, Killua is an assassin trying to change, Kurapika is an avenger who is after a certain group of thieves and murderers, and Leorio is... Well, Leorio. And of course we can't exclude our favorite perverse clown, Hisoka. What a lovable nutcase he is. Now, as for the shows themselves...
Due to1999's added filler, we get a bit more insight on our characters and their motives. That, added with the slow pace lets the Anime take much more time in developing our characters, and make us more attached to them. So yes, a negative can result in a positive.2011 takes a more direct approach and focuses more on the action of our characters rather than the motives. It doesn't exclude the motives in any way, but it's definitely not as thoroughly represented as it is in the1999 version. This can however be a plus, as action speaks louder than words in this show, which has been proven time and time again. If you want to prove your worth to someone here, show them spunk, not intellect. At least, that's how it's seen through the eyes of most of the villains.
Speaking of the villains, they are far from your typical one, or even two-dimensional villain. These guys have clear motives and aren't afraid to show their emotions if necessary, and they will stick up for their comrades.
But which one wins? I'm going to have go with the1999 version. The added scenes and the slower pace manages to grasp you into the characters and their feelings much better. That isn't to say that2011 is poor at doing that, which it clearly isn't, it's just not doing as well of a job at doing it.
Value: Since I'm watched both1999 and2011 you should know that both shows together have a really nice value. If you enjoyed1999, you're gonna enjoy2011, and vice versa. No matter what version you're going for at first, you're definitely going to want to watch the other version after you're done with the first version, that is if you enjoyed the first version you went for, of course. But which one is really the better one in the value department? Well... None of them. Or rather, both.2011 definitely has the better pacing and presentation in its story and art, but1999 has the better character development and characterization, along with soundtrack. So it's pretty much a tie here.
Though2011 would've won this round since it's adapting even more of the Manga than1999, but the same reason I gave at the end of the story section applies here as well.
Enjoyment: Now then, which version is the most entertaining show to watch? Remember, just because something is more entertaining doesn't mean that it's necessarily better. For starters, the1999 show definitely had a more enjoyable Yorknew Arc, due to its tone and artstyle. The slower pacing also let the psychological factors become more clear. However, the pacing goes from okay to bad when the show reaches theOVAs, especially theGreed Island OVAs. This is a problem the2011 version never succumbs to during its first 75 episodes. It manages to keep the tension and psychology even when it's going really fast.
The winner has to be2011. Despite not as good representation of the characters, the amazing art and animation during fights, the much faster pacing and so much more makes it far more enjoyable to watch.
Winner of each department

Closing comments:Hunter x Hunter, no matter if it's the1999 version or the2011 version, is one of the finest Shounens you can watch, due to the more mature feeling and its "almost deconstruction" approach of the Shounen genre.
