The second season of Digimon begins three years after the end of the second movie. Most of the original Chosen have moved on in life, but still keep the memories of the last summer in their hearts Taichi and Yamato are in middle school now, as well as Koushiro and Sora. Jou is writing his high school entrance exams, and Mimi's moved to America. Still, Takeru and Hikari continue their lives, and meet some new friends at school.

These new friends are dragged into something beyond their understanding as the original Destined recieve a distress call from the digital world about a new enemy: a human boy who is wreaking havok in the Digital World, calling himself the Digimon Kaizer. He's devised a method of controlling Digimon's minds, and has also set up a system of Black Spires, which prevent Digimon from Evolving.

Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori soon find that they, too, are DigiDestined, with their own Digimon partners and D3 devices, that allow their partners to evolve even within the influence of the black spires. After Hikari and Takeru find their D3's, they form a great team, and set out to rid the Digital World of the Digimon Kaizer's rule.

Three new kids, new digievolves and traveling freely to Digiworld. It sounds cheap and it's cheap at the beginning of story. First 10 or 15 episodes are very repetative and not great. But then there is Kaiser Arc and Kaiser is very interesting person. Very sad yet gentle too. From old generation you can see here mostly Hikari and Takeru. They are older same as rest of 1st generation kids. The main idea here is evolving. Not only digimons but world and people too. There are multiple worlds existing here. And lot of kids with digimons from different countries. Even adults here are learing about digimons. Time changed. Technologies evolved. It's like watching today's kids using computers freely while you had no such opportunity in childhood. Digimon 02 is not so sweet story as first season. But it's not so black and white too. You can see good people do bad things because of sadness or loneliness. It's interesting see such things in kids show.

This season definitely doesn't hold up to the great moments of the first season. The plot isn't as good and the characters aren't as memorable, even the moments with the original cast aren't that great. Only watch this if you loved the first season. If you just found the first season mildly entertaining, you probably won't enjoy this.

Ok, the level of my interest slightly dropped in this season, because of the 'passing down' the digivices to other characters, making Taichi and the original crew going transparent, even though they were the ones that started it all~

Nonetheless, it is more than watchable, if you can get pass a couple of flaws that kick in every now and then. Also here: SOUNDTRACK BANZAI!!

Compared to the first season, this one felt less inspiring, because it has some elements like being able to easily travel to digital world and back, which led to losing some mystery part.
This season has a happy ending, and still has a lot of elements from the first season, but some things were a bit forced.

Nonetheless, I recommend this season because it does have really good parts.

I will compare this season to the first season ("Digimon Adventure") at some parts. So, let's begin!

Art & Animation

Beautiful openings, endings that are semi-static, just like in the first season, but combined with the songs, that's their magic. Evolution scenes look as gorgeous as in the first season. Character designs are pretty much okay, although some minor changes wouldn't hurt.

All in all, on the good level of digimon fantasy standard.

Sound

Theme songs (opening, ending, evolution, and insert songs) are all fabulous. They fit the show perfectly.

Voice acting is on the same level as in the first season, pretty good. Although I wish that Daisuke had a different voice actor. It didn't really fit the character.

The soundtrack is a combination of the first season's soundtrack and some new tunes. I think that the soundtrack fit this season pretty decently, although the first season soundtrack was better used in situations, and some beautiful tunes not found in 02 were there. I guess that the producers forced the old fame a bit.

Story

Compared to the first season, there is a huge collapse here. What do I mean?
(from now on, 01 means the first season, 02 means the second season)

- in 01, digital world was some mysterious place, remote yet close to the real world. Not being able to access it unless special means were applied was a great factor of mystery and awesomeness in 01. In 02, the children travel back and forth to digital world in almost every episode too easily. Why the heck did the producers kill this great setting of the digital world? A big FAILURE in my opinion.

- too many evolutions || besides the regular evolutions found in 01, here we additionally have armor evolutions. Sure, theylook cool, but 3 digimons each have 2 armor evolutions, and there is no power level difference between the 2 for each digimon. 8 original crests were assigned to 5 digimons here. And it gets worse. There are 2 more crests in this season, and one of them is used in combination with V-mon to create his 3rd armor evolution for 1 episode. Give me a break, would'ya?

- evolutions lost their original meanings || in 01, digimons evolved to child and adult forms for the first time when the children were in danger; NO, in 02 we don't have that. Child forms are immediate, and the adult forms happen later in this season, but as a result ofmutual agreement/deal between partners and their digimons; In one episode, Daisuke decided that he wanted V-mon to evolve to his adult form in order to impress his love interest, Hikari, so he tried various things to accomplish that. After a fight with a digimon, it was like [Daisuke: "V-mon, let's do it!"; V-mon: "Okay!" *BAM evolution!]. What the f*ck? I know why the producers did this, but still, WTF??? The bond between digimons and their partners was shot in its beating heart in this season.
Why did they nullify the importance of bonds and rushed these evolutions? Because they wanted to hurriedly evolve digimons to their jogress forms. Woohoo! Shiny new evolutions, but we killed the basics. Way to go~

- after the first, Digimon Kaizer arc, I felt like the story was over and the producers didn't know what to do next. So they tossed in a bunch of new evolutions, while creating a new, temporary unbeatable foe, who started destroying certain objects that were supporting the existence of digital world ==> again, WTF??! The Digital World should be a world, not a building that can collapse after certain something has been destroyed.

- there is too much brainwashing in 02, and it did almost nothng good for the story.

- the producersKILLED the original significance of the Chosen Children. In 01, we had 8 children specially assigned to carry out a certain mission. Now how cool was that? In 02, every child on the face of Earth is a Chosen Child. Go to hell, producers! You really decided to butcher the meaning of digimon.

- the ending is seemingly happy, sweet, but it's in fact oversaturated. 01 ends with sort of a cliffhanger, but it leaves a superb impression in its viewers. 02 decided to be specific, but it introduced new characters and reality, and that screwed up pretty much everything.

ALL IN ALL ==> I am utterly disappointed with the story and its setting. It's obvious that the producers aimed to sell a lot of toys and video games while this season was airing.

Characters

As I mentioned above, a lot of things got screwed up in 02 compared to 01. In 01, the children were "trapped" in a weird, unfamiliar world for a long time, they were separated from their friends, families and the world they knew and took for granted. This was the perfect setting for the characters to show their personalities, fears, worries, fights etc. They also surely had time and place to develop. Each one of them showed weakness, and used the whole show to learn how to overcome them.
In 02, the characters are so to speak always at home, there are almost no fears. After any scary fight with digimons, they return to their homes and eat, drink, sleep, watch TV and chat happily. And digimons are with them in the real world, mostly in their baby forms, probably so Toei could sell more stuffed toys. Everything got too easy, too accessible. Plus, digimons were not completely something new to 02's 5 main characters. In the very first episode they meet with 01's chosen children, who tell them everything they need to know. Wow, it's almost as if the 02's main characters read the 02's scriptbook.

Even the number of good main enemies reduced drastically compared to 01, and to make things worse, the main enemy of this season is one of the major enemies in 01. Talking about milking the cow.

All in all, I feel sorry for the characters. They will always be outshaded by 01's characters in 01 season. Well, Ken is the only character with a really good development in 02. But that's it, sadly.

Value

While both 01 and 02 are oriented at selling toys, games, etc., 01 decided to be damn good on its own. However, 02 decided that it can feed of 01's fame. It only needed some tasty new spices, a.k.a. shiny new evolutions, mixture of new characters + old characters that we liked in 01. Also, an old main enemy, and so many plot holes.

02 feels like a butchered cow.

Enjoyment

Ughh, what can I say? I enjoyed the audio, the visuals. But the core was dry and too saturated with evolutions and old fame elements. The first arc was somewhat enjoyable. Then it all went downhill, because apparently the first arc was the only decent thing that the staff could come up with in 02. I dislike almost everything in the 2nd half of 02, because the are lots of holes, and it is kind of shallow at many spots.

The producers simply tried too hard to milk the old cow, while decorating its appearance.

This is the second Digimon season and most of its elements have remained the same as in the first. Please read my review on the first season before reading this one since I will only be mentioning the differences between the two.

The production values are of the same quality. They have a few improvements in the 3D effects as they less crude. The music themes are variations of the first season.

The story picks up a few years later where the first team of kids have grown up a bit and most are replaced with a newer generation and of course newer Digimons. This time there are evil humans siding with evil Digimons and again plan to invade the human world, so the kids decide once again to protect both worlds. The scriptwriters tried to be a bit more mysterious and character-centered in the sequel, which helped a bit to make both the plot and the story more complicating. Each character has now more personality and things going on in his/her life, so they feel more realistic. At the same time though they went easy with the adventure and the occasionally scary elements, so it feels much lighter and cheerier. This took out a lot from the atmosphere and the excitement off the first instalment.

The newer generation simply lacks the charisma of the first one, as they don’t seem to be takings their roles seriously for most of the show. They act like they are going for a picnic rather than trying to save the world. Even the whole adventure and mystery are underplayed since they can come in and out of the Digiworld whenever they please, so the feeling of fear and anxiety of the first season is gone.

While they could have been an overall better cast than the first season, the scriptwriters did the mistake of relying too much on cameo appearances of the older cast. Instead on focusing on the main characters, they kept throwing in as guest stars the older heroes. Even after they were over with them, they chose to bring in dozens of other minor characters (other teams of kids with Digimons from other countries) instead of fleshing out the main heroes. As a result, everybody feels undeveloped and uninteresting. Too many characters, too little focus on each one.

As a result, despite the second season trying to be more variable and epic, it only ended up losing focus and passing by as a mostly mediocre children’s show, inferior to the first season.

P.s. I will add here some info about what happens in the rest of the movies and OVAs, since I don’t plan on making a review about them.
- The pilot episode happens before the first season and shows the first time the kids see Digimons fighting in their world.
- The first movie picks up immediately after the ending of the first season. The evil the kids defeated is just replaced with another evil Digimon, that grows in power very fast.
- The second movie picks up immediately after the ending of the second season. The evil the kids defeated in the first movie is back a thousand-fold and threatens to destroy the digital interface of the world.
- The third movie picks up immediately after the ending of the second movie. A weird Digimon appears and makes destined children to disappear worldwide. The kids try to find it, help a kid that lost its Digimon and save the children. It turns out the kid is actually the creator of the ever-present movie villain Diabolomon (this guy doesn’t know when to quit).

"Welcome to the Digital World, we've got funny games"

The problem is that... you don't have funny games anymore.
Welcome to Digimon 02, THE sequel that makes any other sequel to any other anime look like pure geniosity. Anyway...

ANIMATION:

So-so. This is a Toei anime after all, so expect their utterly gigantic laziness splattered all over the anime. The attack animations are always the same, throughout the entire thing! Bah.

SOUND:

This anime's sound was actually bad. Noise also splattered all over the series. As usual, EDs to the rescue!

STORY:

Get ready folks, for one of the worst storylines ever written! 'Nuff said, no?
They were so amazed by the immense popularity of Adventure that they deducted the fans wanted more from the original characters. I wanted to see them, but I wanted to see them contributing more to the development of the story. A good example is the first episode, whose plot is as bad as it can be.

CHARACTERS:

Again, I'd have loved to see the original characters actually being the original characters, not some sleazy imitaions of their former selves. The new characters are even more ridiculous. They were so weak that Hikari and TK from Adventure had to go with them to guide them. And WHERE'S the romance between those two?

VALUE:

Bad.

EJNOYMENY:

Almost null.

Don't watch this. Simple as that.
