As the name suggests, this is the final installment of the Happy Lesson series. If you haven’t seen any of the rest of the series, stop what you are doing and go check them out first, particularly the first season.
Animation: Its about the same quality level as the TV series: average art for characters and backgrounds, but well animated to add an extra dimension of physical humor. All of the characters are pretty distinctive, which is important when you have 5 female leads that spend a lot of time on screen together.
Sound: pretty good. A nice arrangement of music and effects that work well with the story, but nothing extraordinary.
Story: Happy Lesson is a harem anime with a difference. Instead of a lone male surrounded by potential girlfriends, this story is a lone male surrounded by 5 teachers who have adopted him and become his “mamas”. This OVA has several plots that all run together at the conclusion. In the beginning they seem a little disjointed, but by the final episode they begin to sync up and resolve in a unified way. The ending is about an even split as to whether it will surprise you or not. I can see how you could anticipate it easily, but I really wasn’t expecting it, so that was a treat.
Characters: The characters develop more in this 3 part OVA than in the entire rest of the series. As a result, it feels a little rushed, but you at least get the enjoyment of seeing the reach their destinations. With such a large cast, it might be hard to make each character distinct, but all the major ones have personalities that make them stand out. I enjoyed them all, although the homeroom teacher and school nurse seemed to be little similar both in character and visually, but it only became an issue once or twice.
Value: this OVA probably gives you the most bang for your buck of any of the Happy Lesson series. It gives you as much plot and character as you find in the 13 episode seasons, but packed into just 3 episodes. The down side is that they assume that you have seen at least some of the prior series, and do not do much to introduce either the characters or the theme, so it has less value as a stand alone product than it does as part of the greater whole.
Enjoyment: I like this series a lot and so I really enjoyed seeing it get resolved. As with the other series, the combination of situational and physical humor is really good, and this OVA adds an emotional dimension that really doesn’t exist in the TV series. I still think the original TV series is the best, but Happy Lesson Final is a close second and was bitter sweet in that it gave me closure on the series, but at the same time renewed my interest in wanting the series to go onto another season.
