Both main characters live an isolated life with almost no contact to other people. The female love interest has to be introduced to the main character in a coercive way (debt or slavery) to bring love and brighten up an otherwise sad life.

So this is an anime that is geared, in my humble opinion, to a female audience. It was engaging and intriguing but in the progression of the story it was careful and calculated, slow and at times predictable.

A generally positive story for one starting at such a sad and depressing premise. There was what felt to be a lot of repetitiveness of certain themes and elements (at times I thought it bordered on such a high frequency that it must be to save money on production). Additionally usually they show you the progression but in a number of cases we see a single instance and are left to draw the conclusion that now everything is different. There wasn't anything artistically unique, I did like how the main character's Kimono looked, but usually things looked a little off, just not quite right.

It was a nice peak into what life might have looked like at a certain period of time. Generally the series was quite serene. Although I listed quite a few flaws, I did actually enjoy it.

Comedy? …
Romance? Yes.

What would happen if a depressed 17-year-old boy was cast away to the mountains by his rich family and ends up with the most bubbly, friendly and capable 14-year-old girl possible as his bought-to-be wife during the early 1920s?

While this series has some problems, like how it treats passage of time and the age of people, underneath it all is a developing romance as well as a story about finding meaning in life again after tragedy.

Other characters enter the picture to add more perspective, and there are life lessons to take from this series. It takes it slow and seems to mix what is important with what isn't in a strange way to try comedy, and offers a lightweight drama, romance and growth for each character.

"soothing to your soul" ? well ep 6 was pretty much the opposite of that, almost ruined the whole thing for me, I so would have punched her teeth in, but what did they do ? they became friends... That anxiety at the end also wasn't very soothing, but other than that it was good, would have given it a 7, but as it stands it can only get a 6/10.
I'm probably in the minority when it comes to thinking this way so I still recommend it, but it's not a must see, maybe once the story continues.

An eternally positive and hardworking 14 yr old girl who brings salvation to a neglected handicapped 17yr old boy on the verge of suicide. This is the main story. Put in some sweet interesting characters and a retro setting and its utterly romantic.

Do see it. It will be soothing to your soul.

A short and sweet tale of a "pessimist" who nearly gives up on life, until he meets his wife to be!

It was unexpectedly uplifting considering the initial description of this anime! The main character is relatable in that of someone who could be considered skeptical and negative to a fault.

However, all of the main character's negativity is COMPLETELY diluted by the fact that the main female lead is a bundle of sunshine and happiness to an otherwise (By default) unhappy character due to his circumstances.

The female lead LITERALLY makes this show worth watching! A beautifully animated, and a GREAT pick-me-up of a show with hints of subtle drama. What more could you ask for?

The only downside to this one was the FACT, that it DID NOT fully utilize its time setting to its full potential, but it succeeds in what it was trying to do.

Sleeper romance hit of fall 2021!

Really cute, nice romance story in a historical setting, with some nicely paced character development.

Absolutely recommended for those looking for a nice, fluffy show.

Taishou Otome Otogibanashi is mostly very cute and relaxing romance show with fairly unusual pretext that makes it much more interesting than a usual romance stuff. However, it's not always cute and relaxing, it sometimes gets frustrating (as in "oh god, why just don't you say/do this and that?!") and it can get pretty serious at times, too. Romance-progress-wise, it's very very slow-paced but doesn't get boring at all, it's historical context (20's of the 20th century) seems to be fairly accurate (at least to my knowledge of the European life and institutions and their Japanese counterparts of that time), and I had some pretty good laughs throughout the series.

=== Something not directly related to the show and uninteresting to those who understand Japanese ===
As for subtitles, if you're not familiar with the Japanese length units used at those times and such, I suggest watching the show with better-than-Funimation subtitles because they don't bother to give you some notion of how much is, for instance, one ri in kilometres (it's about 4 km, FYI). However, to the credit of the show, I appreciate using the units that fit into the historical context.

It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the fingers, thumb or fingernails of the right hand or with a pick while fretting (or pressing against the frets) the strings with the fingers of the left hand.,ribbon on clothesRibbons on clothes are ribbons that decorate clothing, generally worn by females, and often tied as ribbon bows; these ribbons can be tied on clothing at the wrists, arms, and other parts of the body. This is contrasted to a body ribbon (human or otherwise), which is a ribbon directly on the body, rather than on the clothing. A ribbon can also be tied around the collar of a shirt, blouse, or other clothing top, forming a ribbon tie; that is a specific case which is treated and tagged separately.,singingSinging is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice and augments regular speech by the use of sustained tonality, rhythm, and a variety of vocal techniques. A person who sings is called a singer or vocalist.,twintailsTwintails are type of hairstyle where the hair is gathered into two "tails" on either side of the head. Twintails may also include a pair hair buns, one bun at the base of each tail.

female, black hairThe character has black hair.,blue eyesThis character has blue-colored eyes.,childA child is any person 3 to 12 years old. In everyday usage, babies (younger than 3 years old) are also children, but they are tagged separately; they should not be tagged child as well. Once a person becomes 13, they are an adolescent instead.,hair over both eyesHair over both eyes is hair that is combed over or falls that fall over both eyes, often but not always in the form of hair bangs/fringe, hiding them from view. That is a particularly common design choice for male characters in pornography, especially pornographic visual novels. Often, the hair does not cover the eyes area completely, but the eyes are completely hidden nonetheless, as if they did not exist.,kimonoThe kimono is a Japanese traditional garment worn by women, men and children. They are also commonly worn with a hakama, geta, and tabi.,stuffed toyA stuffed toy is a toy sewn from cloth, plush, or other textiles, and stuffed with straw, beans, plastic pellets, cotton, synthetic fibres, or other similar materials. 18-20, female, lipstickLipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that applies color, texture, and protection to the lips. Many varieties of lipstick are known. As with most other types of makeup, lipstick is typically, but not exclusively, worn by women. The use of lipstick dates from the ancient times.,purple hairThis character`s hair is colored somewhere between red and blue.,shoulder-length hairShoulder-length hair is hair at shoulder length, within a few centimetres margin. This hair length is longer than what one would typically, though not always, see on most males. Short hair includes hair that goes no more than a centimetre or two beyond the chin; anything longer is shoulder-length. Typical male hair at the back of the head which reaches the shoulders does not count as shoulder-length hair; the individual hair strands are very short (0-4 cm), and therefore count as short hair.
