Yumeria is based off of a revolutionary video game for the PS2, which blends dating sim elements in a 3D world with fights in a rpg style known from games like Final Fantasy.
This show's animation is good. It's colourful and the backgrounds are detailed. The fights are fast-paced, no freeze frames or repeating scenes were used. Transformations are rare and don't take a lot of time and the attacks vary. The characters look really good, the design is nice and the girls have theright proportions, their designs and battle suits are something for the eye. Especially Neneko's look is designed for the average otaku (catgirl look combined with a 10 year old girl,Sakura style), but not only her, also the other girls have every a typical design which attracts every kind of otakus.
The sound is fitting all the time. The opening24 Jikan Aishiteru byMoyu Arishima & Tamaki Nakanishi is energetic and positive, while the endingPrecious Treasure byMasumi Asano has a slightly melancholic tone. The background music in the anime has basically two different sounds. The rather funny and bright one of the real world and the serious and fast beating sound of the dream-world. Most of the background tracks fit in either of these schemes, a bit disturbing is sometimes the use of one tune, it's played some minutes without the slightly varying.
The seiyuus did a good job. Tomokazu's voice isHatano Wataru, an unknown seiyuu, but he did a good job on giving him a believable personality. Mizuki's seiyuu isMasumi Asano (Mai - Popotan,Saga - Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar), she has a really cute voice and did also the ending for Yumeria. Kuyou's seiyuu wasSara Nakayama (Midori - Green Green), she has a tomboyish voice which was fitting for her character. On a sidenote, they both already worked onD.N.Angel where they did the dubbing for theHarada Sisters. The seiyuu for Mone,Moyu Arishima didn't have anything to do, besides training to make thousands of different sounds of just one word, mone, since that was the only word she ever had said even in the end. Mentionable is the seiyuu for Nanase. It wasInoue Kikuko, well-known asBelldandy fromOh! My Goddess andMizuho fromOnegai Teacher.
The characters are typical for this kind of anime, well you can't expect something different since the game was half a dating sim. There we have the protagonist, crappy at school, no girlfriend, but still loved by every woman/girl in this show. But he still has an unique personality which differentiates him from other male protagonists. Then we have the childhood friend and classmate, the tomboyish cousin, the little sister you want to pat on the head, the lolita with catgirl look and her twin sister (ok, that one was rather unique from the beginning) and lastly the mother-like, big breasted cousin which always looks and cares for the protagonist. And they all have one thing in common, they have a crush on the protagonist. Luckily that isn't all, they also get enough screen-time and that is used for their development. So in the end they all have a rather deep personality, even Mone who only spoke one word the whole time, but this one in so many varieties that it almost was as if she spoke normally like every other character.
The story is interesting and the idea of the two different worlds and changing between them while sleeping works good. The first half of the anime is mostly comedic, there are a lot of allusions on other animes and games. The viewer gets to know the characters and their relationships, he gets to know the dream world, Moera, and see our heroes transforming and fighting against the unknown enemies, Faydoom and Muma. In the second half the tone of the show slightly changes and the viewer gets to know more and more about the truth of Moera, Faydoom, Mone, Tomokazu and the other charas. Not everything is as it seems to be and some storyturns make the anime till the end interesting. The last, twelfth, episode has a nice storyturn and the conclusion it provides is one of the best I've seen so far this year. Especially theNate/Neneko Idol Pair was cute and funny in the end.
Yumeria is not outstanding, neither is it one of the best in its genre, but it combines many things and provides some interesting ideas so it never gets boring. The characters, although typical - not to say stereotyped, still provide a lot to the story and are likeable. The mix of humour, drama, and action, and the pace the anime keeps up is really good. With only twelve episodes it's worth watching anytime.
Fans ofDa Capo,Happy Lesson and some other animes like these, should definitely take a look on Yumeria. If you are interested in other rpg-like worlds/fights like.Hack andFinal Fantasy, the Moera parts of this anime could be interesting for you.
