Synopsis

Anne,Sprig, andMarcy receive a mysterious message from theking ofNewtopia that sends them on a puzzle-solving mission.

Plot

Marcy treats Anne and thePlantars tobeetle burgers for lunch, during which the frogs see the differences between the girls; those being Marcy's keeping notes and intellect, and Anne's lack thereof.Polly openly admits the Plantars would've been set for life had Marcy ended up with them, insulting Anne and earning a scolding fromHop Pop. Just then, an arrow arrives with a message from theking depicting a puzzle-gram for Marcy to solve. While Marcy, Anne, and Sprig leave to solve it, Hop Pop stays behind upon learning of the free items earned from the restaurant's rewards program, much to Polly's horror.

As the trio heads on to Coral Park, Anne confides in Sprig that she's always felt dumb compared to Marcy, so Sprig suggests she solve the puzzle-gram before Marcy to prove her intellect can match her friend's. At the park, Marcy solves the first clue by looking through a statue revealing the first word, "Bring", written on several trees. When they leave, Anne helps a little newt girl namedEfty get her petKill-a-pillar out of a tree.

At the museum, Anne asks to solve the next clue but when she can't she brings it to a lady namedDoris as "old people love puzzles". However, she ends up gossiping with Doris about her family, giving Marcy enough time to figure out the clue, which is "Me". The trio regroups and head to the last location, a bridge named after Marcy for increasing the weight limit. Seeing this, Anne leaves to take a moment and meetsGertie, helping her pick up her blown away gnatcho trays. Anne voices her concerns to Gertie, who gives her the idea to act like she's smart so people assume she is.

At that moment, Sprig calls Anne over as he and Marcy can't solve the last clue. Using Gertie's advice, Anne leads the group into the sewers where they end up turning a valve that brings a hungry alligator to them. They climb up a ladder to escape, but the manhole is too heavy to lift. Luckily Gertie is nearby and hears Anne call for help; once she gets the manhole off, she's joined by Efty, Doris, & Polly and Hop Pop (wearing a suit of armor he got for eating 1,000 orders of food.) Together, the five of them pull Sprig and the girls out.

Hop Pop begins to lecture Anne for getting into trouble, only for Sprig to tell him to go easy on her and accidentally revealing her feelings of jealousy about Marcy's intelligence. Surprised, Marcy admits she's jealous of Anne's ability to make connections and get along with people, as three people she met in just one day all just risked their lives to help her and the Plantars would do anything for her. The girls embrace with no hard feelings between them, and Anne discovers the final clue is a gnatcho when Sprig offers some he got from Gertie. Once Sprig clears his tray, the last clue is revealed and the message says "Bring me the Plantars". Marcy realizes the king has asked for an audience with the Plantars and congratulates Anne for solving the puzzle-gram, restoring her self-esteem.

Revelations and significant events

Allusions

• The Battle Cats: Gertie is similar to Big Sal, because they are both amphibians with purple skin and dark dots.^[5]
• Winnie the Pooh: The noises the alligator was making sounds the same hooting sounds as the character Tigger makes in the franchise. This is an Easter egg of Jim Cummings being the voice of Tigger when he 'hoots'.
