Pous Urbanus III[1] is gebore asUmberto Crivelli (ook Uberto of Hu(m)berto) ongeveer in1120 inMilaan,Italië. Umberto is aangestel as kardinaal en aartsbiskop van Milaan deurPous Lucius III op9 Januarie1185. Op25 November1185 volg hy Pous Lucius III op en regeer tot sy dood op19 Oktober1187. Hy word opgevolg deurPous Gregorius VIII. Die naam ‘Urbanus’ beteken 'beskaafde'.

Pontifikaat

Pous Urbanus III[2] is in die amp bevestig op1 Desember1185. Sy kort pontifikaat word oorheers deur die stryd met keiser Frederik I Barbarossa. Na sy verkiesing as pous, bly Urbanus aartsbiskop van Milaan en as sodanig weier hy om Frederik se seun Hendrik VI te kroon as koning vanItalië. Hendrik trou op4 Januarie1186 inMilaan met Constance van Sisilië. Terwyl Hendrik in die suide saamgewerk het met die opstandige senaat vanRome, het Frederik die passe vanAlpe beset en die kommunikasie van die pous wat toe in Verona gebly het, en sy Duitse aanhangers verhinder. Urbanus wou die pousekskommunikeer maar die inwoners vanVerona het geweier om die handeling in hulle stad te laat plaasvind. Die pous vertrek toe na Ferrara, waar hy sterf voordat hy die ekskommunikasie kon deurvoer. Legendaries word gesê dat die pous dood is van skok oor die mislukking van die tweede kruistog deur die verlies by die slag van Hattin en die verowering vanJerusalem deurSaladin op2 Oktober1187.
