In a sign of the times (and where things are going), visitinggoogle.com/ai now opens Google Search AI Mode.

Previously,google.com/aimode was the shortcut to the latest Google Search experience on desktop and mobile web. It has now been shortened for a slightly more memorable, if not obvious, URL.

This joins the desktop Chrome New Tab Page shortcut inside the “Search Google or type a URL” field, and in the Omnibox depending on your query. (The former, introduced in July, has become my go-to way to access AI Mode. Personally, the shortcut I use the least is the filter in the top-left corner of the Search results page. I never switch modes, and find myself immediately going to the homepage directly when I know it’s a prompt type of question.)

In the Android and iOS app, AI Mode now appears as a 2×1 button underneath the Search field. That’s followed by shortcuts for Search Live and gallery (Google Lens.) The company reverted to the previous design, which I thought looked quite nice, that placed AI Mode directly in the Search field. That bar is back to a look that has been in place for years with voice search and Lens.
