CLIFTON, Va. – Top performers from Sunday’s Nike Football The Opening Regional held at Centreville High.

Alpha Dog
One of three to be invited to The Opening Finals this coming July, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Top247 defensive endChase Young flashed why he is so touted, also earning position MVP honors.
Ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 2 weak-side defensive end, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Young is just tipping the iceberg of what he could be down the road. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him grow another two inches at the rate he’s going, and he has a quick first step and he follows it up with smoothness at the point of attack.

Very tough to handle on the outside, Young won’t decide until late in the recruiting process if not National Signing Day. The top contenders at this point include Alabama, Maryland, Ohio State and USC.
Next Five Defense
1. Upper Marlboro (Md.) Wise Top247 2018 safetyAnthony Lytton looked more like a cornerback in this setting, earing high praise from the secondary coaches at the event. Reacts very well, has good ball awareness, was one of the fastest players at the camp and that speed translated to the competition portion. Clemson, Florida State, Maryland and Penn State among the smart ones to offer early. Could be one of the top cornerbacks in America.
2. Greenbelt (Md.) Roosevelt 2017 defensive endLawtez Rogers was another that earned high praise from the coaches at the camp. Used his strong first step to blow by offensive tackles and also impressed with his size. Rogers won nearly every rep he took in 1-on-1s. Maryland has offered.
3. Waldorf (Md.) North Point linebackerKeisean Wilson was the most dominant player at his position in cat and mouse drills, getting downhill in a hurry to get his hands on the running back on the offensive side of the line. At 6-foot-2, 230-pound, Wilson stood out physically, and all afternoon he kept popping, and likely projects as an inside guy. Holding 13 offers, Wilson appears to be under-recruited.
4. Nobody made more plays in the secondary than Upper Marlboro (Md.) River Baptist cornerbackTariq Castro-Fields, who was bigger than expected and performed better than his mid-three star grade. A good old-fashioned Maryland vs. Penn State recruiting battle here. Won defensive back MVP honors.
5. Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Top247 2018 defensive tackleAustin Fontaine was powerful and quick inside, he attacked the offensive lineman’s shoulder and was just a handful at the point of attack. 247Sports ranks him as the nation’s No. 6 defensive tackle with early offers from the likes of Clemson, Georgia, Maryland, Penn State, Tennessee and Virginia.
Top Five Offense
1. Once the 7-on-7 portion hit, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Top247 all-purpose backAnthony McFarland Jr. was a tough man to mark. Quick in and out of breaks, McFarland has the hands of a receiver, catches the ball really well and is certainly elusive in space. Also has a strong lower half. Top contenders include Alabama, Maryland, Miami and Tennessee. McFarland earned an invite to The Opening.
2. Washington (D.C.) Wilson receiverSean Savoy is a fast, athletic receiver, a good route runner, had a very consistent day as he appeared to be open and catching the football on every rep. Virginia Tech and Miami are among the top contenders.
3. The top performer in the Elite 11 setting was Washington (D.C.) St. John’s four-star quarterbackKasim Hill, who in drills threw the football more consistent than any of his peers. Spun the ball well, nice velocity, threw well on the move, hit his windows and was accurate with the deep ball. Was awarded MVP honors for his position group.
4. Nobody flashed more than Washington (D.C.) Friendship 2017 receiverNykeim Johnson, who won the fastest man competition and then went out and torched the secondary as a dangerous downfield slot receiver. In the same mold as Maryland 2017 commit D.J. Turner. Was awarded MVP honors for his position group.
5. Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga 2017 centerJohnny Jordan was the best offensive lineman at the camp and it wasn’t even close. Earned high praise from the staff, a very stout player, strong hands, sits really well and is a smart football player. The 247Sports Composite ranks Jordan as the nation’s No. 12 center. Maryland, Virginia and Syracuse are the top contenders. Won MVP honors for his position group.
Notables
• The third and final invited to The Opening went to Olney (Md.) Good Counsel defensive endJoshua Paschal, who tested off the charts, measuring in at 6-foot-2 ½, 253-pounds with 4.75 laser-timed 40-yard dash and a 39-inch vertical. Paschal’s Nike Football Rating is the highest among defensive linemen in the country thus far. As far as his on-the-field performance went, he earned praise as a guy who will be able to set the edge on the next level and also provide a pass rushing element as he continues to develop. Maryland is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite.
• Woodbridge (Va.) C.D. Hylton Top247 2018 running backRicky Slade finds the hole quickly, made the fastest man finals and was perhaps the most fluid running back on campus. Good feet, moves well side to side and has the burst to get upfield quickly. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 2 running back in the country.
• Two of the top performers at the camp were a pair of 2019 recruits that look super special in Washington (D.C.) St. John’s linebackerShane Lee (formerly of Gilman) and Hyattsville (Md.) DeMathaDemarcco Hellams. Lee stands in at 6-foot, 240 but ran 4.74 on the laser with a 36-inch vertical. Michigan recently offered. Hellams is a smooth, sure-handed receiver that glides around the football field and an instinctual player with a knack for staying in bounds and looking for extra yardage. Maryland has already offered. Both are big-timers.
• Final five on the offensive line included Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy’s 2018 Penn State commitChris Bleich, Glenelg (Md.) High’sDakota Davis (showed a lot of toughness), Jordan, Potomac (Md.) The Bullis School’sAiden Brown and Olney (Md.) Good Counsel’sJoshua Contee. Bleich looked the part, every bit of 6-6, 305, had a great punch, still needs to work on his feet.
• Final five on the defensive line included Young, Washington (D.C.) St. John’sCam Goode (short, quick and powerful), Eastern Shore’s Ja’Mion Franklin (has a mean streak to him), Twyman and Paschal.

• Sickerville (N.J.) Timber Creek quarterbackDevin Leary was the top underclassmen passer at the event, perhaps the strongest arm on the field, Leary made several eye-opening throws. Temple has offered, Penn State, Notre Dame and North Carolina among the schools he’d covet a scholarship from.
• The camp staff believes 2018 receiver Jebril Murray from Mechanicsville (Va.) Atlee has the goods to be special in his class.
• Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh running backMylique McGriff won position MVP honors, making people miss in cat and mouse, and also made a lot of plays in 7-on7. Another running back that flashed a lot in 7-on-7, particularly making plays downfield wasJaret Patterson of Laurel (Md.) St. Vincent Pallotti. Towson (Md.) Calvert Hall’s BJ Watson was the most elusive running back in cat and mouse drills.
• Penn State linebacker commitDylan Rivers plays downhill really well and attacks the ball. Top247 linebackerTyshon Fogg is rangy with good speed. Maryland linebacker commitAyinde Eley closed fast on running backs, was rangy in 7-on-7, is good in space.
• Maryland cornerbackFofie Bazzie was impressive physically, covered some of the top receivers in attendance and has the skill set to be a very good player in the Big Ten. Alexandria (Va.) Episcopal Academy’sJonathan Sutherland made several pass breakups in 1-on-1s.
• Penn State Top247 defensive endYetur Matos has an incredible, 6-5, 238, with room to grow, great first step, needs to work on playing with his hands and adding moves to his arsenal.
