It's not real. That's why he asked if you were joking because it was kinda apparent the whole wire length equal to 1/2 or full length of the wave. Frequency was a joke don't do this mod it breaks your phone. Unless you're cool with that.

Okay so my friend just did this to my phone, slightly differently, he used coax cable and it seems to have worked swimmingly. So don't mind all these people saying don't do it because they probably weren't comfortable doing hardware mods or just not experienced in doing so. Just research before doing anything. But it turned out great for me.

One post.

Please take that into account fellow members.

Of course, no offence intended. But with one post, comes no credibility. ?

And to show I'm not trying to just be a Meany.... I could create an account right now, come to this thread and say this mod was the best thing ever in the history of the universe.... And that it did my dishes, cleaned my house, gave me money and cured anyone with any disease in a 100 mile radius from me.

But with only one post.... Would you believe me? Obviously if I had a hundred thousand posts you would.... But not one.

(and of course no one would or should ever create another account... Cause that's against the rules) ?

no, that's not what I was getting at at all

to catch the modes of the electromagnetic wave during transmission/reception you use a wire that's half or a whole length of the wave; and nowhere in between.
since you can't vary the properties of the medium through which the EM wave is travelling (space/air/etc) to affect it's speed (and therefore frequency) like you can in a guitar (tighten string or make the wire thicker to make it vibrate at its modes more slowly-->lower frequency), you just shorten or lengthen the wire itself to match the frequency. Calculate the wavelength of a 2.4Ghz Wifi signal and then start looking at how long antennas are

Well as I had moded similar connections to huawei modems then I now from where comes this problem with loosing antenna. So if you put this wire too much in that tinny hole you will jam two tinny metall plates who is making conection to pass throught anntenna signal. So if they are jamed or worse broken you will newer get connection back and internal anntena will newer work except you took soldering iron and remove this test connector and connect both wires(in image input and output to antenna), and second way to broke things up is that if you put wire into holle and its not to deep but wire shorting with gnd enclousure, in best scenario it will just use all gnd as antenna and due to incorect antenna(gnd plate) size will not receive any signall or in worst scenario burn out transmiterr/receiver. So I strongly recomend not doing this mod if you really doesn't had idea how all works.

I just want to know if using a coax cable will be safer to use. My service is completely horrid.

No. No use of this mod is safe. Read the posts in this thread

Exactly. If your signal is really that bad, I'd look into changing carriers.

I haven't paid off the phone all the way yet. :/ or I would be on straight talk.

i am going to do this trick with my phone but a little modification to OP. i paste tape under the wire passing. i'll post after doing it.

So did you do it?
What were the results?

They probably bricked their phone. I'm sure there's a reason they never followed up. I'm still not convinced this modification does anything positive. OP hasn't returned since the first 3 pages or so. The half dozen people in this thread that tried this mod all faced issues such as no GSM network even after factory images flash, poor signal strength, etc. Only one person in the thread besides OP claimed that this worked for them and it was only 1 post. Another member even called him out after the fact and they never responded back.

A few engineers as well as a few other people who build or repair radios, electronics, etc have all come in here saying not to do this mod.

The general consensus from this thread is that the mod is dangerous and should not be attempted at all. Everyone who tried it was left with ill effects. Even OP abandoned this thread long ago. Another member even ended up RMA'ing his device under warranty (illegal fraud, by the way) after attempting it. If your signal is that horrible then contact your carrier about a network extender or booster. If those won't help your situation then look into switching carriers.

The thread really offers nothing productive as it has rendered several users phone worse off than before. Not one single person can confirm this worked for them. One person just said so on a forum. Confirmation doesn't work like that. I have 3 left hands. Until I show you I have 3 left hands, why would you ever believe me? You shouldn't. The exact same way you shouldn't believe anyone in this thread had this work for them without proof. Of which there is absolutely NONE.

I'll report the thread again as it offers nothing productive or positive to the community and since discussion of RMA'ing the device under the limited warranty. This is insurance fraud which is illegal and XDA should not support that. I see no reason why this thread is still open or being bumped. For what it's worth, check out the threads one star rating (terrible).

If moderators still do not want to lock this thread, let's just let it die already. Don't do this mod, period. Thread reported.

I completely agree. When I previously reported this thread, I got the following response:

I believe the review made by the moderators at that time was in error. This thread is dangerous and is a recipe for disaster. It does not belong on XDA and must be closed before more devices get obliterated.

This is not like other mods that have a potential to brick your device. This is a mod that is likely to brick your device, for all the reasons mentioned throughout this thread.

Warnings in the OP stop no one. Look at a pack of cigarettes - everyone still smokes even knowing that its likely to kill them from cancer.

What if I start a thread saying to dunk your device in toilet water because its a new method to make your phone look shiny clean? Well, some people may not brick their device, even if I put a warning in the OP, but that doesn't mean that thread is acceptable. This mod is tantamount to dunking your phone in the toilet and hoping it doesn't get bricked.

They still share the same opinion.

"As we've said before, pretty much everything on XDA has presumed risk. There is a big warning in the OP. If someone is silly enough to do this on their own, then that's their choice."

Difference is most everything else on XDA has potential to make your phone greater. This will only ever have ill effects.

FWIW
@El_Daddy the OP did not even have a disclaimer when posted. If you read my earlier replies here you can see me suggest a disclaimer in the OP.

Idk if someone googles increase signal strength and lands here and tries it then they're hit. I'm talking some random person who's never been on XDA before. So they ruin a phone when there are other routes they should have tried first.

It's ultimately up to the moderation team, I know. I respect their choices either way, but most people take a risk to brick their phone (think HTC or something when I use the term brick) to get something good or useful out of it.

This literally only causes damage and doesn't even work...

And the next post will be someone asking "has anyone tried this? Looks good!"

I noticed my signal strength is very poor from day 1, but it is generally on my workplace the signal quality is piss poor so I opened up the phone. For those who want to open it head toiFixit Nexus 5 teardown to open the back cover. It's simple really, if you have a guitar pick you can start opening from 3.5mm jack.

DISCLAIMER: I HELD NO RESPONSIBILITY OF DAMAGED IMPOSED FROM THIS MOD. SOME PEOPLE GET WORSE RESULT THAN WHAT I GET AND POTENTIAL TOTAL SIGNAL LOST.
IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HARDWARE IN GENERAL I STRONGLY ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM DOING THIS MOD.

    Explanation of risks

Amateur radio operator/builder here. you can get away with using a random wire lenght for a receive only antenna. doing that with an antenna used for transmitting is a bad idea. if the antenna isn't designed to accept the frequency you are trying to transmit on, the signal will be reflected back from the antenna towards the finals (the transistors used to transmit the signal) and the RF energy is absorbed by them. this usually burns out the finals and I suspect that is what has happened to the cellular transmitters for those of you with no cellular connectivity after making this mod. Don't mess with the antenna, the one that comes with the phone is designed to minimize the standing wave ratio and ensure that the RF signal is transmitted out of the antenna instead of being reflected back at the finals and destroying them.

You gonna need a thin wire like the one you found on DC motor engine winding inside, such as pictured below:

    wire.jpg

Next locate the GSM antenna external port, I highlighted in yellow below (image courtesy of iFixit)

    gsm.jpg

Next is very simple just put the wires in the holes and put a simple tape to ensure it won't move around. Put the other end of the wires near batteries or something wherever you fancy

    final.jpg

So that's it, now at work I always gets full signal strength and my phone is noticeably cooler and batteries is anywhere from 10-25% more from the same usage. You can try it as it's very simple.

As an Electronics Engineer I recommend using insolated wire only. Also do not let the wires touch. They should probably run as far apart as possible. You are defeating the purpose of the antenna by letting them touch. Maybe one short running vertical as shown in pic. And one short running horizontally. The wires should match the wave lengths of the transmission frequency or else you will receive too much interference. It would be good if someone could give us a correct calculated lengths.

Disclaimer: I have not performed this mod.

So what's the consensus on this, I've been eyeing the thread and if it works I need to do it cause at my house I get weak signal even though I know for a fact others are getting full bar.

Be very cautious. Everyone besides OP who tried is having issues with poor signal after trying this mod. I'm not willing to do this myself, because like I said on page 1... There was a similar mod for GNex except once the external antenna was used, the internal antenna was rendered completely useless. You couldn't go back from it. I asked if he got signal if he removed the wire and he said yes, but we can't be sure about that. He hasn't been back to the thread since. Maybe he just assumed it would work? Who knows though.

I still have 2 Galaxy Nexuses. I tried the mod on one roughly 2 years ago and it can't get a signal anymore no matter what I try. Even with external plugged in.

Try the mod at your own discretion. Just know you can put your phone in airplane mode, permanently. If your signal is that bad everywhere you go, give it a try if you're feeling risky. Otherwise I really wouldn't advise it.

Also, this voids your warranty, completely. Unlocking your bootloader is fine on a nexus. Hell you can even send it for repairs with a custom ROM. Those 'mods' will not void your warranty, but this hardware mod will. If you need to RMA the device after attempting this (maybe because of this..), you're out of luck.
