ThisMulti-Year Program Plan sets forth the mission, goals, and strategic approach of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO). The new plan identifies BETO’s research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) strategies and crosscutting programmatic activities, and outlines why these undertakings are critical to meeting the energy challenges facing the nation. The MYPP is intended as an operational guide to help BETO manage and coordinate its activities, as well as a resource to communicate its strategy to stakeholders and the public.

The SAF Grand Challenge is the result of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other federal government agencies working together to develop a comprehensive strategy for scaling up new technologies to producesustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on a commercial scale.

  • The newSAF Grand Challenge 2021-2024 Progress Report defines metrics and baselines progress toward these goals. Federal agencies have made strides in expanding U.S. SAF production by releasing new funding opportunities and initiatives; providing expertise and technical assistance to industry; increasing interagency collaboration; and providing data, modeling, and analysis to decision makers.

  • An interagency team led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released theSAF Grand Challenge Roadmap Implementation Framework in November 2024. The Implementation Framework highlights current Federal agency capabilities and programs aligned with the actions called out in the SAF Grand Challenge Roadmap and identifies existing gaps where additional effort, public-private partnerships, and support will be needed to meet the goals set forth in the SAF Grand Challenge.
