Territorial Dispute:In May 2016, the Marshall Islands filed a declaration of authority with the UN overWake Island, which is a U.S. territory, reaffirming that it considers Wake Island part of its territory; control over Wake Island would drastically increase the Marshall Islands’ exclusive economic zone; the U.S. State Department is assembling a group of experts from both countries to discuss the maritime boundary.
