St. Vital Library is located near the intersection of Fermor Ave. and St. Mary's Road, across from the South Branch YM-YWCA.
The first St. Vital Library operated from a small rented quarters near the junction of St. Mary's and St. Anne's roads. In 1961, the City of St. Vital sold the present site to the Library Board for one dollar. The library at its present location was opened in 1963, and was designed by architect George A. Stewart. The interior features a mezzanine, wood roof members, a natural wood deck and skylights. The library became accessible with the addition of an elevator in 2015.
In January, 2017, the library closed for renovations which included a new exterior ramp and entrance, washroom upgrades, improved parking, safer stairs, accessible collections and the addition of a second book return. The library reopened on May 28, 2018 with new furniture, flooring, interior and exterior painting, a new tutorial room, and an indoor Family Literacy playground as well as a new roof and skylights.
