Zabit Akhmedovich Magomedsharipov (Russian:Забит Ахмедович Магомедшарипов;[4] born March 1, 1991) is aRussian former professionalmixed martial artist. He competed in theFeatherweight division of theUltimate Fighting Championship (UFC) andAbsolute Championship Berkut (ACB), where he was theACB Featherweight Champion.
Magomedsharipov was born inKhasavyurt,Dagestan ASSR,Soviet Union, on March 1, 1991, ofAkhvakh ethnicity. Zabit has a younger brother,Khasan Magomedsharipov, who is also a professional mixed martial artist.[5] He started to train infreestyle wrestling at 11 years and thensanda. In 2003, he joined theFive Directions of the World wushu boarding school, where he lived for 10 to 12 years for education and trained martial arts three times per day,[6] under Gusein Magomaev, the school's co-founder. In 2012, he made his professional MMA debut.[7] In December 2019, his brother followed in his footsteps by making his professional MMA debut.[8] Magomedsharipov became well known during a period where fighters from Dagestan earned a reputation as formidable opponents in the UFC.
Magomedsharipov fought in a handful of different promotions early in his career, amassing a professional record of 6-1 before signing with ACB.
Magomedsharipov went 6–0 in the ACB and was featherweight champion.[9][10]
Magomedsharipov signed a four-fight deal with the UFC in May 2017.[11]
Magomedsharipov was expected to faceNick Hein on September 2, 2017, atUFC Fight Night: Struve vs. Volkov.[12] However, Hein pulled out of the fight on August 21[13] and was replaced byMike Santiago.[14] Magomedsharipov won the fight via submission with a rear-naked choke in the second round and was awarded aPerformance of the Night bonus.[15][16]
Magomedsharipov faced promotional newcomerSheymon Moraes on November 25, 2017, atUFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Gastelum.[17] He won the fight via submission in the third round.[18] The win also earned Magomedsharipov his secondPerformance of the Night bonus award.[19]
Magomedsharipov facedKyle Bochniak on April 7, 2018, atUFC 223.[20] He won the fight by unanimous decision.[21] This win again earned him aFight of the Night bonus.[22] Shortly after the bout, Magomedsharipov signed a new multi-fight contract with UFC.[23]
Magomedsharipov was expected to fightYair Rodríguez on September 8, 2018, atUFC 228.[24] However, Rodríguez pulled out of the fight on August 23[25] and was replaced byBrandon Davis.[26] Magomedsharipov won the fight via submission in the second round with a modified kneebar.[27]
Magomedsharipov facedJeremy Stephens on March 2, 2019, atUFC 235.[28] He won the fight by unanimous decision.[29]
Magomedsharipov was expected to faceCalvin Kattar on October 18, 2019, atUFC on ESPN 6.[30] However, Magomedsharipov was removed from the card due to injury on September 13 and the pairing was rescheduled for the following month atUFC on ESPN+ 21.[31] He won the fight via unanimous decision.[32] This fight earned him theFight of the Night award.[33]
Magomedsharipov was scheduled to faceYair Rodríguez on August 29, 2020, atUFC Fight Night 175.[34] However, Rodríguez pulled out with an ankle injury.[35]
On April 26, 2021, Magomedsharipov was removed from the UFC official rankings due to inactivity. At the time of removal he was ranked #3.[36] In early June 2021, it was reported that Magomedsharipov was suffering from health issues related to his immune system, which ultimately required career-threatening surgery.[37]
In September 2021, Mark Henry announced that Magomedsharipov would be returning to the UFC soon.[38]
In June 2022, Magomedsharipov notified the UFC that he was retiring from active competition.[39]
He is currently coaching his younger brother, Khasan Magomedsharipov.[40][41][42] According to his younger brother Khasan, Zabit is interested in competing in wrestling and grappling competitions in the future.[41]
