Willy Maltaite (French:[vilimaltɛt]; 30 October 1927 – 18 February 2000), better known by thepseudonymWill ([vil]), was a Belgiancomics creator andcomics artist in theFranco-Belgian tradition. In the genre known inFrancophone countries asbande dessinée, Will is one of the young cartoonists trained byJijé, who made them live and work with him in his studio inWaterloo. He is considered one of la Bande des Quatre (the Gang of 4, which also includedAndré Franquin,Morris, andJijé himself), and a founding member of theMarcinelle school.[1]
Over a long association with theFranco-Belgian comics magazineLe journal de Spirou (Spirou magazine) starting in 1947, Will created, illustrated and wrote several series, includingTif et Tondu (as main artist, taking over from creatorFernand Dineur), andIsabelle. He wrote scripts for, among others,Spirou et Fantasio andBenoît Brisefer. During the period of 1958–60, Will also acted as artistic director ofSpirou's rival publicationTintin magazine.
